Ever since 2011 Gaga has been arguably playing it safe. After Judas Born This Way had the songs with the most relatable lyrics released, even if they were some of the weakest songs from the album. The album's most critically praised songs such as Scheisse, Government Hooker, and Bloody Mary were not released. The same thing has happened with ARTPOP. Applause was released as the lead single which is one of the weakest tracks on the album. The album had a lot better lead single choices, but with less commercial lyrics. Also Venus as a single got cancelled for the more relatable "Do What U Want"  to be released as a single instead.

Back in 2008 Gaga's music was different than what was out there, and people noticed it. In 2009 when she released Bad Romance everyone was calling the song weird, but it became the biggest hit of 2010.

Should Gaga stop playing it safe and release the more risky tracks as singles? or would you rather she continue to release the most commercially relatable tracks as singles, even if they are weaker?

What Gaga needs to do is to create a smash, make a great video with great performances and then come hard!

She's not tho. Calling her music "art" is definitely not a safe move. Not that her work isn't "art" cause imo it is, but the GP certainly does not see her music as art

She released a country rock ballad as a single, she released a song with R. Kelly so yeah she is totally playing it safe

I don't think she's playing safe, she played safe with The Fame. After her music has been more experimental and her images is more crazy. IMO.

I don't think Marry The Night was playing it safe at all, lyrically that is

What other risky songs had she released?

During The Fame, she was the safest she's ever been

BR was very safe. But it sounded weird, because she still was a new artist.

TEOG - her 2nd best song and heavily critically acclaimed

You and I - Gaga said it was her best work

MTN - her anthem and BTW's theme song

Applause was safe, yeah I agree

DWUW is too good to be never released

GUY sounds experimental for 2014

So far, the singles choices have been exellent imo

Applause ? The weakest track ?

Are you kidding ? It was her most successful single since The Edge of Glory.

Applause was a very good choice.

But the problem is not the single choice, it's clearly the weak promo. With a big promo like Capitol did with Katy Perry or others, she can have other little hits.
