There is always a constant debate here about why Katy is always successful and why Gaga is not doing as good as her when it comes the the charts and radio airplay anymore. So here is why I think Katy is successful and why Gaga is not as successful:

-Katy: Her music is almost always relatable. The themes in her music are universal and simple themes that always apply to a broad range of people. She sings about love, parties, birthdays, ect.

-Gaga: Her music themes are almost always abstract and very specific. She sings about art, about her fans, about appluse, about rape, ect.

-Katy: Not only are Katy's themes relatable, but she also keeps those themes as simple and "methapor-less" as possible. She is not one to write lyrics such as "One second I'm a Koons, then suddenly the Koons is me. Pop culture was in art, now art's in pop culture in me".

-Gaga: Not only are her themes very specific and uncommon, but her lyrics are always full of metaphors, symbolysm, and references that are not always easy to understand. Just check the lyrics above one more time ok.

-Katy: She is a perfect trend follower. When Dance/Synth pop was very popular (specially because of Gaga), she changed her pop rock sound to a more dance/electro oriented album with Teenage Dream. Now that urban is one of the most popular genres she releases a single like Dark Horse, and then proceeds to release a retro 70s/disco influenced song like Birthday (Pharell, Daft Punk, Bruno Mars anyone?).

-Gaga: She basically lives in her own molded world. She creates things that people will later try to follow, or will later hate. Rarely does Gaga ever care to follow any trends.

-Katy: Her music videos are are very simple. Sure they have big productions, but her themes are usually themes that are already very well known to the public (Tarzan, Egyptian Culture, Parties, Aliens.)

-Gaga: Her music videos are alway very Gaga. Her music videos don't have that "comfort zone" factor simply because what Gaga creates is usually original creations that could have only come from someone like Gaga. Not to mention that Gaga does not hestitate to offend or cause controversy when trying to convery her messages.

-Katy: Her Managment takes every promo opportunity that they can find. As simple as that.

-Gaga: Lets just say that she hasn't always had the best promotional team.

Finally you might say that Gaga was always able to get away with all the stuff mentioned above in the past. But I think this was only the case because she was something new and fresh at the time. Either way, the reasons mention above is why I love Gaga (even if she having trouble matching Katy's success).

Yes, Katy sings for masses.

GaGa makes high artistic songs.

Katy is a singer. GaGa is artist.

Katy and Gaga are not in the same "art box". Sales and chart success doesn't say a thing about persons quality and their work quality.

They're totally different artists with totally different musical goals.

Part of the reason Gaga's lyrics aren't as praised is because she went from making the masses feel good to making the music more about her.

It's not as fun hearing someone sing about their own ego tbh. Roar ( while kinda awful lul) was empowering and fun to the listener. Applause was empowering in the chorus, but the verses were like "Oh, Gaga wants our attention. meh."

Sorry but what's the point in comparing the two? There's no need to know -again- why Katy's been more successful than Gaga lately. They're both different and let's say Gaga is always up for new challenges and music, unlike Katy, I'd say.

Most artists almost always sing about themselves (what happens in their lives).
