https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/best-albums-2025-1235342974/lady-gaga-mayhem-1235343021/ Rolling Stone calls Lady Gaga’s MAYHEM “the year’s strongest pop release yet” and includes it in their best albums of 2025 (so far) list: “In the lead-up to Lady Gaga’s latest album, MAYHEM, there was a lot of talk about Gaga returning to her roots. For Little Monsters, it’s been too long. MAYHEM is the type of fan service that doesn’t dilute the artist herself. Gaga feels like her most authentic self from start to finish on this album: There’s no characters, concepts, or aesthetic impulses overshadowing the songs. Instead, she’s made one of her most sonically challenging and uniform albums yet: a mix of Nine Inch Nails, David Bowie, Prince and her Fame Monster-era self, rolled into the year’s strongest pop release yet.”54 points

Earlier today I was in this big theater premiere event, and when we left the theater there was a DJ playing music in the foyer, and Vanish Into You was playing It was the beginning of the chorus and immediately I was like “I love this song, what a massive hit” and then 3 seconds later I realised it’s VIY and that NO ONE HERE knows it but me. No one was singing along because NO ONE KNEW this song. I looked around and it felt absurd, like if Bad Romance was playing in a room full of people and no one knew it. It was SUCH a weird feeling. Every day that goes by without it being a single is a huge, HUGE waste23 points

https://www.pastemagazine.com/music/best-albums/the-40-best-albums-of-2025-so-far When Lady Gaga says that Mayhem is a “pop album,” she’s using that description loosely. It’s not a sibling of The Fame, or Born This Way, or Chromatica—even though all of those titles have mothered Mayhem into existence. Gaga, who is knocking on the doorstep of 40, has finally drawn from her greatest wellspring of inspiration, be it the chaos of counterculture punk, the panging, crushing metallic walls of Nine Inch Nails, Prince’s output with the New Power Generation or, unequivocally, David Bowie’s discography, namely Fame. She returns to the spaces of Chromatica, pulling from boogie and French house; she restores the sleazy, crooked divinity of The Fame with a potent dose of sex, power and resistance. “Vanish Into You” is her best song since “Judas”; “Zombieboy” welds a stupefying, Chic-like, four-on-the-floor rhythm with a head-splitting, angular guitar stroke; “How Bad Do U Want Me” summons the synths of Vince Clarke; power-balladry lights a fire within “Blade of Grass”; “Garden of Eden” soothes Gaga’s pleasured, bad-romantic soul after her slow-dance with sinners on “Disease”; the fist-pumping “Perfect Celebrity” calls back to her 2009 VMAs performance, where she bled from her stomach while singing “Paparazzi”—leaving a lot of people asking the same question then that I have now, as I listen to Mayhem front-to-back: How the hell did she pull this off? This is some of the most joy Gaga has felt making music, all but confirmed not just by her tone of voice when speaking to me about Mayhem, but in “Vanish Into You”‘s emphatic, “We were happy just to be alive” chorus. And it’s going to make a lot of her longtime fans happy too. Just like how her unpredictable outfits during the awards show cycle of 2010/2011 kept everyone guessing, the songs of Mayhem are just as capricious, strange and rewarding. —Matt Mitchell20 points

I can do you one better. Here's the transcript. The clip is only a minute long "I think both Bowen and I share a common -- [ Laughs ] ...a common, uh, likeness for Gaga. She wanted to sit down and chat with me about the performance and the creative, and her vision. There was a great video that had been directed by both Gaga and Paris, her choreographer. We Zoomed the week before and we chatted just about what the songs were about, and I actually got to direct her first ever TV performance at the NewNowNext Awards back in 2007. We chatted and reminisced about that a little bit. The second song, "Killah", she wanted to start off stage at backstage. I got to sit down with Paris and talk about the different angles that we had come up with and, like, what worked at certain areas. We've done some musical monologues where we'd walk through the hallways, but I hadn't done a music performance that didn't take place on the stage. One of my favorite things to do is collaborating with an artist and also with a choreographer. It was fun to do it a different way."19 points

Mayhem is truly one of the most endearing yet stratospheric releases by an MPG, capturing everything that made the artist a living legend, incorporating every key inspiration in their creative life, yet making it incredibly forward-facing, fresh and wholesome. It's a gift that will keep on giving. I'm so very proud of Gaga and I cannot wait to see all the amazing things she will do next. It truly feels like a new beginning18 points
