Just finished rewatching the HBO Monster Ball documentary and something crossed my mind. The shows that were filmed were the two MSG dates on the last leg of the tour. In the intro, where she's getting coffee and crying while her makeup is getting done, and talking about how it was growing up, the way she talks about the shows make it seem like it's her first time playing the Garden. The entire concert seems like it was filmed as if it was her first show in that landmark arena in her hometown. However, she had already played 3 sold out MSG shows in July 2010, and it doesn't make sense why they would film the second round of shows there and make it seem like it was her first time. It's kind of a random question but it was on my mind after watching the concert.

That‘s wilde … I went to both of the first MSG shows, and never thought about it in that way, but it‘s an astute observation … in immediate retrospect, my logic for going to both of those specific shows were “I should probably go to her first show at the Garden,” and, “I should probably go to her first HBO filming at the Garden” … the first first show I made said decision the afternoon of, after deliberating for a few weeks or months … the first HBO show I got sold fake tickets and then got real tickets at the box office when the lady at the booth felt bad for me, she even helped me pick out where I wanted to sit … but, the shows kind of do hit differently, and they felt significant in their own distinct ways, and (again again) in immediate retrospect (motifs!), in context of her career and her identity or space within the sort of pop music historical narrative consciousness, the HBO filming at the Garden was a whole new echelon of milestone moment … for the Tisch dropout who was too theatrical for pop music, if nothing else … so in their own way the HBO shows were definitely a distinct first time, within a capacity … but this is just rambling and might not make any sense … good question though

While many thought this was a fun Mediterranean motif, the earrings were later revealed to be genuine historical artefacts dating back 3,000 years to Iran. Fans were first clued in when Harper’s Bazaar listed the earrings as a pair “from Barron London, constructed from 1st-millennium BC ancient discs.” The Barron London website in turn says the jewellery is from Glenn Spiro’s collection. Spiro owns a very private and exclusive jewellery house for the uber wealthy. The gold pieces are described as “a pair of Ziwiye gold medallion plaques, circa 1st millennium BC, Iran. The discs, which were turned into earrings by Spiro, are believed to be a part of the Ziwiye hoard, alongside a number of other artefacts that were found uncovered in a plot of land outside of Ziwiyeh Castle, near the city of Saqqez in Kurdistan province, Iran, in 1947. An Instagram creator by the handle @dr_archaeology pointed out the murkiness around the way the artefact was sourced. She claimed the pieces were “likely looted from Iran” and are “gracing the ears of an American actress from a country that just bombed Iran.” “Let’s be real, the point of these earrings is not to showcase legitimate ancient artistry, it is to fetishise the past, to be a commodity, stolen from the elite … this is about class signalling,” she continued in the video, which has sparked debate. x

Dua’s voice is *fine*, but imo Charli has more expressive range as a vocalist, whereas Dua’s delivery is generally emotionally flat and vacant. Ironically, this is lowkey historically accurate. Both Persia and Greece were invading and looting each other for centuries. It’s a bit tasteless but also quite fascinating showing how our relationship with these things change or remain over time. It’s naive to try put every artefact in its exact origin when part of the items biography is how it’s rediscovered and travels. I’d like it to go back to Iran with the owners’ good will and consent. But realistically, Iran’s clerics are generally against surfacing these artefacts, they literally feature a God on them. The regime carefully weaponizes and censors its history. It would be nice if these could be returned to Iran. But the regime isn’t and the discs are actually being looked after and inadvertently raising awareness. Maybe a return one day, but until Iran has a government that truly values its own secular history and people, these artifacts are arguably safer where they are.

Once again the "backlash" is against the wrong person. They should waste their energy on Glenn Spiro who actually holds this artifact in his personal collection instead of giving it back to the rightful owners. If they really cared much about this topic, they would learn how many artifacts, art pieces, and so on has been stolen and now owned by rich people, traded by rich people and even the black market. But they don't care, they only care to join the backlash party, add some leftish political statement about Iran because "they care" and "America is bad", checked the box, and moved on with their privileged entitled day... see them next week at the cinema for Spider-man Bran New Day.. and later for Dune 3.

There's a few things worth talking about it here. Firstly, the Ziwiye hoard allegedly contains treasures from multiple iron age occupants of modern age Iran including the Parthians from what is now North-Eastern Iran. This is important for understanding their design, because the Parthians were in the 6th century BC were assimilated into the Achaemenid empire which stretched into Northern Greece and by the 4th Century BC were part of the Hellinistic-Seleculid empire following conquests by Alexander the Great. Their design looks greek because they culturally were connected to the ancient Greeks through geopolitics. Now, I said allegedly. The Ziwiye hoard isn't proven to be real. There are no records of the archaelogical dig attributed to them. The Ziwiye hoard by all the evidence we can prove, came into existence after these pieces had floated through the antiquities market for a number of years and their provenance as ancient artefacts is dubious as a result. There is a belief in archaelogical circles that the Ziwiye hoard is effectively a myth created by numerous dealers to sell pieces - with many of the pieces being questioned as potential forgeries. Now. I didn't say it meant nothing. But I was pointing out, that in the current climate creating uproar and funelling activist resource into it is counter-productive. Because even if the Ziwiye hoard is real, fighting to protect these treasures (which aren't at risk of destruction) is the equivalent of fighting to protect the various pieces of art, metal work etc confiscated by the Nazis as part of the holocaust. It is absolutely a bad thing, but what is the priority to save here with the resources available to us as activists? Human life from the cultures who produced these pieces at one point, or the cultural artifacts themselves?

I voted for II for a few reasons: I listen to the Confessions Tour more than I do COADF. CII has better track stops than CI, which means listening to any song in isolation is a better experience than some of the tracks on CI. I don’t always want to listen to the full project. I have this same critique of Chromatica (911 start is jarring on shuffle). ROL is my favorite, and CII pulls some of that influence in really well. That said, if you haven’t yet the albums also go very well together when listened to back-to-back. I think both albums are generally strong contributions to her catalog. I expect CII will just join my heavy rotation alongside Music, ROL, Confessions Live, and LAP. These are the only albums I consistently return to so far.
