Luc 4,775
Coldplay is still in top 10 and still selling good. Actually they are the biggest album seller even with no hit single and it had 2 commercials (one of them was NBA thing and there was just song not Coldplay or something) during the release week with just 1 song but drag I guess ? I don't get why he would compare Coldplay with Gaga anyways :dead: it's better to compare Coldplay to another artist with basically 0 airplay, like Britney or Lana. Luc 4,775
Lead singles are very make-it or break-it for most albums, if people do not like the lead, they are less likely to buy the album. Quite simply, a lot of people did not like Applause for whatever their reasons. They thought Applause was representative of Gaga's new album and decided not to buy it. That's my opinion, and despite what people say on here about how good Applause was or how it got back the GP, I really don't feel the same way. Back when Applause was released, everyone I knew didn't like it very much. They all made fun of it, especially the 'Applause, Applause, Applause' part. Applause was really only kept afloat by the media coverage of a lead single from Gaga, Radio Support, and the VMA's performance. It would not have done well if it wasn't the lead single. Applause may hold a special part in the hearts of many Gaga fans, but it will go on to be one of the more forgotten Gaga singles. I wonder how a GP favourite like DWUW would have fared as a lead.. Interesting concept, but I wonder if it would be held down by any R. Kelly controversy in the US... I think many fans wouldn't have liked DWUW as a lead. It's not very Gaga at all. And it's not what Gaga hyped up the album to be. Perhaps Gypsy could've been a better lead single, or a different song. Those people that dislike Applause, would've disliked Venus too. And Venus is a lot less catchier, so that's probably not a good choice (and it hadn't even been written yet). I truly think that there are some great songs that have yet to be released, that she could've used as a lead single. If these 15 songs are actually the best 15 out of the 100+ songs she wrote Birthday would have flopped hard without payola, oh the power of money Spain would've flopped even harder without their payola, 5-0 imagine

Interesting concept, but I wonder if it would be held down by any R. Kelly controversy in the US... The media and radio was not here for Applause at all. It was struggling on radio since it was released for almost 2 months, the only thing that kept it alive was the KIA commercial (which helped for its first month) and the GP that kept it in the top 10, so then FINALLY the radio stations got the hint. It was abysmally flopping on radio when it was released, so dont even. And her VMA performance was overshadowed by Miley-gate. Not to mention she was basically on a blackout during her lead single. It was a great lead single choice. DWUW wouldve as a lead wouldve only attracted more attention to the R.Kelly scandal. The only lead single worthy songs were Sexxx Dreams (which was originally the pick), Venus (when it was finished, I believe she did write it earlier considering the Venus theme in the Applause video, she just FINISHED it before the album release), and Aura (it ONLY works as a lead tbh). I honestly think DWUW was destined to flop because of R.Kelly, even with a video, it had the most performances and it never really got in the top 10 outside of its pre-orders, the radio was even pushing it. She shouldve waited to release it with Christina or another male R&B artist tbh. BYE

Eventhough I don't like DWUW a lot though It would have done much much better obvously if they had handled the whole era better and had released a video. They gave the song great performances but the promo was random and didn't manage to pull the song int he top 10 of iTUnes and BB Hot 100 and the lack of video killed it. Paper Gangsta 6,693
The only lead single worthy songs were Sexxx Dreams (which was originally the pick), Venus (when it was finished, I believe she did write it earlier considering the Venus theme in the Applause video, she just FINISHED it before the album release), and Aura (it ONLY works as a lead tbh). Sexxx Dreams wasn't orginally the pick. SD and Applause were "fighting" for lead single place. And nope i think it is vice versa, i think Applause era, video ne VMA performance inspired her for Venus +when she was asked what song would she release as lead if Applause wasn't lead she said Venus. If it was recorded before why would SD and Applause fight if she prefered Venus?

Idk but everyone on this forum claims Venus was written/recorded/thought of in September I honestly think she had recorded parts of it a long time ago, and it was supposed to be the lead that Tara talked about being produced by an "up-and-coming female producer".
