Did Poker Face or Just Dance influence the lives of anybody besides Gaga and her team (and the fans who became fans)? Did people refrain from commiting suicide after hearing JD or PF? I don't think so.

Poker Face and Just Dance did have impact. those two were everywhere (especially PF) and till this day Gaga's classics.

besides LM's NO ONE remembers OR cares for Hair and MTN

Some straight boys want to **** her,(Same thing with Katy and "her rack") not buy her first silly pop song. Now, Problem is a little different because it is more R&B with another GLTF as a collab. That's a song they can get into, due to those factors.

Straight guys don't care how good a pop star looks, they aren't going to buy some pop tart single or album just because they want to **** the girl. :smh:  The pop tarts have to find a way to make the music more interesting, by adding rappers or doing R&B s-x type songs or Alt. Rock type music.

What does Applause have to do with Ariana's song in this discussion anyway? We were discussing Ariana's first two singles and expectations for this one. Why throw that in there?  No one said she was doing badly and I certainly didn't!

I don't know. It feels a little bit different with Ariana. And perhaps the hype from straight males made her well-known to females too?

Most people here knew of Ariana Grande and her talent before she debuted tbh

Ariana had way more than a Nickelodeon fanbase. LOTS of people viewed some of her covers before her debut single (including me), and she quickly became popular through word of mouth (all straight boys think she's s-xy and cute and tell friends about her, she gets lots of social media attention) and with her debut single she already had a bigger first-week than Gaga with Applause.

OH MY GOD I JUST FOUND THIS. THE SHADE

OMG I love it. Ariana has so much talent. Can't wait for the day that she will take the risk and sing that inspiring and unique songs herself.and not the mediocore generic songs she sings now. :later:

But does that mean it had less impact? Just because they're remembered, doesn't mean they influenced more lives.

Impact =/= popularity. They have almost nothing to do with eachother. Impact is how much influence it had on culture and people. Popular is how often it was played on rado.

She just needs Pop radio on her back tbh. It's smart that she's releasing generic singles at first, she'll be well-known with Pop radio and they'll pick up her songs faster (like a Rihanna song). When she has shown the world who she is, she'll be able to make more songs that are less generic. But that probably won't happen, because labels want to make as much money as possible

but MTN and Hair have neither. people outside the fanbase barely knows them.

I give you that those songs might have some meaning to the fans but out of that nothing else

Indeed, this is the recipy Gaga used. All singers reach that crossroad when they make it commercialy, I hope that she will choose the Lady Gaga and not the Katy Perry path.

Not in the US. She was the typical Nickelodeon-Disney girl, that all the tweens (including young gay boys) stanned for.

Straight high school/college  boys aren't running around with Ariana's first album on their playlists ...some of them would **** her though.

Then again, many straight guys like their girls to look older than 12. They want girls and women with some curves and who look legal! ;)

They had less impact on pop culture, for sure! Poker Face and Just Dance have way more impact on pop culture!

JT is in the Top 10 on iTunes so in what way is that payola? So silly.

Good for Ariana and Iggy.

In what world does this matter.. AT ALL?

People are buying the song because it's catchy and fun. It has nothing to do with the BS you're discussing.

True, but in my opinion the tens or even hundreds of lives that were actually saved by a song like Hair or BTW or the whole album are worth more.
