Luc 4,775
You've got to keep it simple if you are Katy Perry. If you wanna make history, you take risks. Sometimes you've got to know the limits and know which boundaries to push, and which not. Musically, Judas was AMAZING and it had potential to smash with other lyrics (as shown by its chart success in countries with an extremely low amount of english-speakers, like Brazil and Japan), but really, the lyrics are so extremely polarizing. I just think that Judas is not that offending to those that are not relegious. It was a big risk bit it was not as damaging as you make it seem. TEANUS 14,930
Totally agree with the Judas talk, and it's affect on BTW and her career and appeal. Born This Way, even though it as a whole wasn't very commercial, had some great single potential. It should have went like this: 1. Born This Way 2. Hair (Hair continues the self acceptance and anti bullying theme, people would easily relate to it) 3. Scheibe (Gaga would have gotten praise from feminists, if Gaga still had a great public appeal people probably would have thought the gibberish was cool) 4. You and I (US Only)/ Marry The Night (WW) (You and I was a great single choice for the US, but for everywhere else....not so much, with momentum still there from the past successful singles, Marry The Night could've caught on better WW) 5. The Edge of Glory (This would've been even more successful with more time to think about a videos d more momentum) So much wasted hit potential in Hair, Scheibe and The Edge of Glory  British social ladies with upturned pinkies, glasses clinking // xoxoTEANUS
VforVendetta 2,024
She lost a lot of fans, she lost her pop radio support... You know, people were really offended by it. Those protests in SK, Philippines and Indonesia were mostly because of Judas for exampleGaga didn't lose her radio support with Judas. Gaga started loosing her radio support after Telephone and it had nothing to do with the songs, Its just that Gaga is too polarising to become the b---h of radio and as soon as she started loosing the "new" factor she lost her radio support because the Gaga persona is too much for radio, radio never was and will never be her strong point regardless of her domination during TF era. Still would Judas as a song ever get airplay support? No, but it didn't kill Gaga's radio power, as it is seen by TEOG. Lady Gaga will never rely on radio again, she is not a persona made for radio, her commercial power lies in her personax the hype around her and the media. The Aura that everyone wants to touch. This is a major reason that AP struggled, because of the negative hype around it from the beginning. As for the protests, you know you are on the right track when closeminded people protest against you.

XoXoJoanneGaga 629
Exactly. Stans think sonics (the actual sound of the song) overrides the message (or at least the perceived message). "Government Hooker and Scheisse would have slayed because they slay!" No. Just because something sounds great doesn't mean people are going to get over the fact that it's not at all speaking to their "I wanna get drunk in the club to this song or at the very least bop in my car on the way to work" sensibilities. Lol yes, Scheibe would have completely bombed, the title is "****" in German, half the lyrics are in German and the other half are "preachy" feminist lyrics. There's a reason she doesn't choose her singles
Mills 446
Gaga couldn't even score a number one with Bad Romance...freaking BAD ROMANCE! Radio has never treated Gaga's songs like they treat KP's songs. Bad Romance has way more of an impact on the past decade than the majority of Katy's number ones. If BR would have been a song by Katy, radio would have MADE SURE that it hit #1, at least for a couple of weeks! What about Paparazzi only getting to #6? No, Gaga would not have had 7 #1s...that distinction was and still is reserved for Katy, by radios pushing every one of her songs as hard as they can get away with! Gaga wasn't the kind of artist that was non-polarizing. She wasn't an artist for all the religious/conservatives and little girls and their mommies. She has always pushed buttons and starting with the meat dress...then Alejandro...then BTW, (and everything surrounding it- with the constant, vocal, in your face support of the LGBT community) she started pushing too many in the U.S. When she killed her momentum in the U.S., by being more than a Pop Tart, that was it. I was talking about Pop where she basically ruled during 2009-2010. She was never a huge thing on the HOT 100, compared to the likes of Mariah Carey before and today's Katy Perry, Rihanna, Bruno Mars. And that's largely because of her sales and strong competition whenever she has a major single release. Even her biggest hit Poker Face only had one week at #1 because of The Black Eyed Peas. Bad Romance had to deal with 2 consecutive huge hits (Empire State of Mind, Tik Tok) which made it stuck at #2 for weeks. And while Born This Way gave her 6 weeks at #1, its US sales were nothing comparable with the single that dethroned it (Katy's E.T.). What I meant was that they had a chance to score 7 consecutive #1s on Pop, have they not made the MV of Alejandro too polarizing. But they didn't. I don't have a personal problem with it though since that MV made her seen as a serious artist comparable to Madonna. The only flip side of that video release was her streak of #1s on Pop ending (and the start of the media/public backlash which made her "uncool" for some). It led for the entire album to slow down its momentum. She should have scored a second HOT 100 #1 from BTW (even for 1 week) at that time from hype alone, but with a rush release and controversial lyrics in the most inconvenient timing, it made such chart domination impossible. Like I said though, take the religious themes out of Judas and that song would've been golden so I can see why it was chosen. In my opinion Marry the Night should've been the second single and either Bloody Mary or Electric Chapel should've been the fifth single (more ballad, slower songs comparable to Paparazzi and Alejandro). MonsterMum 2,532
I feel she should have started with Marry the Night as an intro to the darker BTW era both visually and metaphorically. It would have also surprised people less about the dark nature of the Born This Way MV as well.
