djBuffoon 12,123
Poor you feeling alienated from a pop star for exactly the length of time it took you to read that. You have no idea what real alienation is like. She was saying this because people thought her music was "too gay" - her point was that being gay wasn't a bad thing. Nobody ever talks about "straight music" being bad. You just don't know what it's like, period, and I definitely don't sympathize with your so-called "straight alienation." We should all be so alienated. This. And plus, this comment is older than my nieces and nephews.
Morphine Prince 106,245
I don't think she meant it the way you might be perceiving it. This, however is a reason why anyone who isn't gay that likes her music is automatically branded as gay by other people. Gay people are more alienated in real life every single day, so feeling ailienated by a Pop star doesn't bother me much. She chooses her demographics. yourfaves 317
Identity is huge in art now. It's one of the core concepts of post-modernism. And LGBT* identities are on the rise. People are reading too much into this. Straight fans shouldn't feel alienated and gay fans shouldn't feel catered to. This is Gaga's art - not ours. Bellatrix 34,811
I agree with you, but I think it's her way of arguing against the people who wanted her to be less-gay this era Lose control. Let go and fall. Do you get the satisfaction?
GoldenNovember 485
As long as the word gay has the power to make people create threads like this, Gaga is doing the right thing by using it again and again. If a sentence like: "My show and music are gay!" alienates fans, we still have a long way to go. I am a straight guy and I NEVER felt alienated by Gaga, nor do I feel excluded for not being gay. It's hard to light a candle, easy to curse the dark instead.
whytennis 0
I absolutely hate when she labels her music like this. I obviously know that the fanbase is hugely gay, but it makes straight fans like myself feel alienated in a way. I think this is what made her lose so many hardcore followers back in TFM days. Back then, everyone and their grandmother loved Gaga and knew many of her songs, yet she still pushed how her fans are the gays. This doesn't make me stop stanning for her in the slightest, but it's very annoying how she makes that assumption. She's not saying her music is for the gays. I think everyone is misreading this quote and overlooking the context. She was about to go on tour with Kanye West, and the interviewer wanted to know if her show would change given that she would be performing for both her fans and Kanye's fans. She's acknowleding the huge influence gay culture has had on her music, her image, her spirit, and she's saying she won't change the show just because some people in the audience might be hostile to her gay influences. Shadow 6,632
Was this at that Roseland show? :( Well, why the hell did she include the other folks in Born This Way if it was just about the gays? Do your own research.
awpy 9
As a straight fan this kinda puts me off, why does she have to bring this up.
MikeyMoonShine 0
Well what is Gay music? Maybe Gaga sees it as, her music made by her (and she is gay) for her fans, many of whom are gay. She isn't going to "tone down" just because some straight people are uncomfortable with flamboyance or lgbt references, that wouldn't be her. For all the straight people who feel alienated by stuff like this, why? I don't listed to Lady Gaga because I am Gay and I listen to all kinds of other music that isn't stereotypical "for the gays" music. Why should this make any difference to anything?
