You shouldn't give so much meaning to this quote. Like, she's not releasing an official statement about her music, she was just replying to a dude who said 'tone down the gay'. You have no idea what real alienation is like. She was saying this because people thought her music was "too gay" - her point was that being gay wasn't a bad thing. Nobody ever talks about "straight music" being bad. You just don't know what it's like, period, and I definitely don't sympathize with your so-called "straight alienation." When Gaga said it she was talking about how her and Kanye are two very different artists and she has a lot of Gay fans that listen to Pop music and Kanye has a lot of straight fans who listen to Rap music, and Gaga was saying she wasn't gonna change up herself or her show or her music for The Fame Kills Tour and that her and Kanye were gonna act like themselves. :ARTPOP: That's all she was really saying. Her music takes cues from the type of music that plays at gay nightclubs and that many people consider gay. Quite frankly, it'd be disrespectful of her not to pay homage to her inspiration. The impacts and achievements of LGBT people have been downplayed for too long and if she tried to pretend her music and act had nothing to do with gay culture, I'd be very disappointed. I'm a straight Gaga fan and this quote does not alienate me. BTW did not alienate me. Her talk of gays did not alienate me. Her saying she would disown her song if he were straight was... disconcerting, but I have a feeling that was a joke in response to her peceived gayness. Why should it be alienating to acknowledge that Gaga owes a huge deal to the gay community, which produced and supported many of the icons which inspired her and which supported her in her earliest days? If Kanye said "my music is black music," I would not feel alienated because hip-hop has roots in the black American struggle and it would be disingenous to ignore the cultural origins of it. We shouldn't try to erase anything distinctive about art because someone might feel alienated. Her music is very gay, yes, so what? Just because it has its roots in gay culture does not mean straight people can't relate to it! Hip-hop was originally music by the urban community for the urban community, but that never stopped suburbanites from consuming it. Saying that your music is gay or black or girly or whatever should not be taken as a statement of exclusion but as a statement of acknowledgement. So many groups have had their contributions to history ignored (see: black people were the pioneers behind the blues, rock n roll, barbershop quartets, and jazz, and nowadays many people view them as white genres or don't even know they came from black origins!). We should never push aside the contributions of gay people to make the product more appealing to straight people. If someone reaching out to a marginalized group makes you feel alienated, it's probably more about your own feelings concerning that group or your expectation to be catered to than it is about the person purposefully excluding you. Gaga has never said straights cannot enjoy her music or that they are not welcome in the fanbase. Saying her music is gay does not change that one bit. She might give a shout out to her gays fans during her shows, but she's obviously very welcoming to everyone during her show. Gaga would have had a much harder time becoming a star if it weren't for the gays in 2008. We were there for her long before the mainstream population. She hasn't forgotten that. If she wants to give us a shout out during her shows, I'm sorry that makes you feel uncomfortable or "weirded" out. You really don't think the straight fans are isolated in this community? Just like the gay community, I have been a fan of hers since 2008 so now we've pretty much been the outcasts for some time now. I don't mind it and I'm not "weirded out", but she has labeled herself as a gay icon. I'm not asking her to say "thanks for my few straight fans", but she has been very in our face about it at times, especially the first few times I've seen her. Jeff Kunst 0 Posted April 3, 2014 Share Posted April 3, 2014 In that quote she is appropriating the pride and defiance of the gay community in the face of persecution and finding solidarity in that for all of us who feel left out, marginalized, misunderstood, etc. (hence the name "monsters" for her fans). She's not gonna tone anything down. I think she's using the word 'gay' because it's almost synonymous with her.
