it's impossible to compare GUY to Dark Horse.  BUT, I will try!

The two songs, while equally catchy, have totally different lyrical content -- in the way it's delivered.

The way it's delivered, to be COMMERCIALLY sucessful, (radio airplay, liked by General Public, ect) matter very very much.

Here's my take on it:

The idea of Dark Horse is:  a woman is in charge of a relationship.

However, Dark Horse doesn't go into graphic s-xual detail.... at best, the lines "Mark my words, this love will make you levitate" and the rapper's verse "She ride me like a roller coaster, I'm sprung and I don't care"

are somewhat subtle allusions and double meanings to s-xual things. In essence, the careful wording of Dark Horse's s-x appeal is easy to follow, easy to figure out, and easy to enjoy in your own context. Relatable. Every woman (and man if you are gay) wants to be someone's Aphrodite.

Now, on to GUY. GUY is riskier, and more out there, than Dark Horse.

Once again --- a woman is in charge of a relationship.

But, the subtleties are almost entirely gone, and the s-xual details become much more explicit (in my humble opinion, they box the song in).

The relatability starts to tank because GUY is schizophrenic, the points of view and meanings bounce around and change every other verse, and I for one started to get lost when interpreting GUY and finding out, "where do I stand in this song, how do I personally relate to this song. what does this song mean."

The intro alone, being that of a s-x tape, isn't radio friendly, because the GP is gonna go something like, "WTF. A s-x tape. It's that crazy pop slut Lady Gaga again. Always talking about s-x." Now, some will like this, and think it's risque, and edgy, which it is.

But once the points of view start bopping around and running into one another, things get messier to understand and stick with as the songs' narrative.

Example:

"Greetings Himeros
God of s-xual desire, son of Aphrodite
Lay back, and feast as this audio guides you through new and exciting positions"

Just having that for an intro is gonna make a lot of the GP just turn the off switch. I know some friends of mine whom I gave ARTPOP to, who admit they skip past the song whenever a parent or a teacher or other person is in the room because the explicitness of the lyrics make the listener feel uncomfortable playing it.

As you delve deeper into the song, the constant juxtaposition of roles (and role playing) becomes harder to follow.

She wants to be a guy in command, but wants the man to be in charge too. the confusion between GUY's abbreviation (Girl Under You) gets worse to follow when she states in the chorus:

I wanna be that guy (G.U.Y.)
I wanna be that guy (G.U.Y.)
I wanna be that guy (G.U.Y.)

Now because I am a hardcore fan of course I can follow this, she wants to be the girl underneath him during s-x -- got it, a-ok!

There are many GOOD relatable lyrics in GUY, as well!

This is absolutely iconic in message:

"I don't need to be on top
To know I'm worth it
'Cause I'm strong enough to know the truth
I just want it to be hot
Because I'm best when I'm in love
And I'm in love with you"

and:

"I'm gonna wear the tie, want the power to leave you
I'm aiming for full control of this love (of this love)"

again, are very relatable and empowering for women and men alike to identify with and call their own.

But the GP can find the lyrics tricky to understand. I asked a few friends casually (non Gaga fans) and got a smattering of answers about GUY.

"WTF? it's all a s-x tape."

"She wants to be a man? I thought she was one already, a transvestite?" ()

"I don't get it."

"So she's in charge? Oh wait, she doesn't care who's on top, she just wants to make him happy and she enjoys it too... right, Chica?"

"Wait, what's she saying at the end? what does it mean? German?"

:toofunny:

As you can see, GUY, even in a test pool of 5 random people I happen to know, is CONFUSING to the GP.

Therefore, that is likely why it may not  be selling too amazingly well --- BUT GET THIS, BOYS AND GIRLS....

It's NOT the end of the world.

This is the single biggest popstar of our whole generation of millennials.

Lady Gaga will go down in history as an unparalleled artist across all kinds of genres, from music, to fashion, to empowerment, to activism, to history. One song like GUY doesn't mean a pile of beans to her success.

Do What U Want was a sleeper hit, and it was actually pretty big in some parts of the world, but no one seems to recognize this.

What's its peak position in your country's official music chart?

#5 for me.

Pretty sure it would have gone Top 10, Maybe even Top 5 if she released the video. Or performed it @ the Grammys tbh

It was so stressful finding concert tickets when she was slaying, Now i dont even have to spend my coins till the night before the show   :legend:

In regards to my other posts, it was very, very much liked here. It should've been more successful than it was. I honestly don't know anyone who hated it.
