Why doesn't Gaga just dump out all her songs?

I remember the interview of her saying she wants to release ACT II before the tour starts...in my head...I'm thinking...Oh...I'm upset we haven't heard from Gaga in a while, but I know she's probably working on the album in time so she can release it among the new video and other projects...SXSW interview happens...and now she not only admits it's real, but tells everyone theres VOLUMES of songs, but doesn't want to release it cuz she enjoys having songs only for her and her friends to listen to

 

I'm sorry, but is it just me or is Gaga being selfish? Doesn't she already do that with her friends BEFORE albums get released? They enjoy the "privacy" of hearing new songs, but then they officially get released! Why would she tease so many songs and tell us the songs are coming on ACT II and are amazing only to NOT give it to us

That would also cost a lot of money for the label to make a album with all the material.

Maybe when she dies they always release unreleased material which I find rude.

But, she explained it in the Keynote interview. She said that she doesn't like how music on the internet is consumed at the speed of light and criticized and spit out the other side as either a 'hit' or a 'miss'. And so, she thinks it's fun to have some records she can keep to herself and her friends without having to worry what the internet has to say about them. 

 

I, myself, am a musician and have been pondering posting my music to soundcloud, but the decision to release your music on the internet, especially when it's very personal or when you've spent a lot of time on it, it's a really difficult decision because it's hard to see people you might not even know being hyper critical of the way you've chosen to express something that you feel. Just because she's a musician it doesn't mean that she's obligated to release everything she creates. 

 

(Also, her label contract probably doesn't permit it)

Demo's are sort of like a musician's sketchbook. 

 

Why would an artist post rough idea sketches next to their completed masterpiece? It's unprofessional, it'll distract from the masterpiece, and it'll make people look at the masterpiece in a way the artist didn't intend.

 

I'm sure that Gaga has a lot of unreleased demo's that she wants to stay demo's because they contain personal information that she doesn't want published to the world.  Also, she may continue to refine the demo's or pull lyrics/beats/melodies/ect. for actual releases.  

 

Maybe there is just one lyric she likes from one demo and she feels like it is perfect for a new song she is writing.  If the demo is released, then she can't use that lyric anymore.  Who knows how much of ARTPOP's lyrics and concepts are simply a patchwork pulled from a progression of demos.

 

Not true. A part of Earthquake, which had leaked, was recycled for Fashion of his Love. Katy Perry recycled an entire song and sent it out as a single. I know songs that have gone through many different stages by the artist that finally ended up in their right place... but we still know and hear those other stages. She most certainly can use something from a leaked demo; whether she wants to or not is a different issue.

 

I get not wanting to release material that is "less than stellar." As such, perhaps at the end of her career, as a final hurrah for the super fans, she could release a box set of unreleased stuff, demos, etc. Y'all know plenty of classic artists who have done this and continue to milk that cow years later. Because only super fans will care about it and it won't be part of an album, it doesn't have to be exposed to the whole world. Emilie Autumn, for example, has a compilation album of B-sides, rarities, and unreleased stuff. There's some crappy stuff there, but I'm glad it exists because it shows more angles of her musical work... and personally, I love hearing a song evolve from demo to finished product. It's such an amazing process.

 

tl;dr: I wish Gaga would include demos and unreleased stuff and in-studio stuff and basically everything because that'd just be so amazing, but she's probably super picky about what gets released and so we'll never hear that stuff officially. Maybe leaks. Maybe in forty years, we'll get "The Fame: Super Mega Ultra Edition: Disco Stick Re-release" with bonus tracks like "The Fame" demo, Sometimes, the RedOne version of Paparazzi and Eh Eh, and then every five years they'll keep re-releasing her stuff and adding one new song with each re-release. With all the stuff she has, we'll be dead before they've gone through her vault.  She says "maybe someday I'll release it." I really hope she does. :)

She can always be like Bonnie McKee or WIll.I.Am.
