When did ART and MUSIC become so commercial? Where have you been? That IS pop culture. That is modern culture.

Sell, sell, sell, profit.

Our ideals and even gaga's ideals don't make it fact, and everyone needs to make a buck somehow. SxSW gets promotion, Gaga gets a performance and public time, and her fans get a good show. Or any music fans who will be there to see other sets.

I don't quite understand what you are upset about? If you upset about the current system, then boycotting SxSW won't do a thing. It wouldn't do a thing anyways. Change only happens when there is a clear goal and everyone fights for the same thing.

If there is anything you should be upset about its the social system we currently live in. If you want to boycott or protest anything. It's that. Use your voice for more meaningful things.

You might be right about the system and everything actually, but I will never accept the fact that pop culture is about money. You cannot learn pop culture by industry singers like Rihanna or Katy Perry. I'm not trying to criticise anyone here but I'm not really into today's mainstream music and events, which are basically a tool for corporations. This is one of the first time I'm seeing a ticket event like this that Gaga is connected and that's why I'm saying we shouldn't support it.

Do you actually realize that Gaga is a commercial artist? The corporations sponsor her tour, she is sighed to corporation Interscope. She sells music to make money for herself ( she has the money, she doesnt giving them out and she doesnt give music for free), corporations can also claim that want to change the world as gaga by philantropy. Judging by logic of your thinking, you should be blocking Gaga as well a be fan of indie artists, which dont promote, do not go to media and give music for free.

um... Pop culture is ALL about money.  Things are popular in pop culture because of media, advertising, and promotion.  If Interscope didn't promote Gaga at first, nobody would know about her, or she'd be an underground artist.  How about all those product references in her early videos, which she stopped doing after Telephone when she could afford not to?  Everything in pop culture revolves around money.  Thats a big reason why popular artists, shows, etc, are all so homogenous and why Gaga has to fight against the system to have some level of independence and identity.

So yeah, it's a little cheesy ( nacho cheesy?) to be part of the big old Doritos umbrella, but it gives her the ability to stage a show there and pay her band, and promote the BTW foundation.

As far as Doritos wanting to use images for promotion... well, it's standard ( why else is Doritos paying for all this), and also if you don't like it, don't do it.  Like you said... feel free to boycott on principle.

Pop culture = Popular culture. What is popular sells. That hasn't changed since the 50's. Pop culture may change, different things become popular every year and those trends show through the music. Music and Money have always had close ties, that's why there is a business too it.

I suppose everyone has different ideas about it.. but to me Pop music was always about selling, not artistic integrity.

I'm also uncomfortable with Doritos as a sponsor and when I first heard I was like  . It's a tacky brand irrelevant to her interests, I similarly get the sense of her 'selling out'. At least Virgin Mobile was a communication company.

She should be careful of the companies she associates herself with.
