You can be commercial and still have integrity, though (aka pretty much all of Lady Gaga's career). Well you have to have some sort of commercial appeal to make your music last and have an impact. Lady Gaga has always been about exploring fame and changing pop music. One of her famous quotes is "Pop music will never be low-brow". She can make meaningful music that is pop music. She can experiment with new sounds while still being commercial and making pop-music.
