Too big of a break between albums  and she wasn't featured prominently enough on her first single. Most people probably didn't identify the song with Jessie J.  I f he wants to really be successful here she is going to have to build a fanbase the old fashion way in clubs and theaters until her name has enough recognition that things like this don't happen. I also think her second single choice wasn't the best idea. IMO the mid tempo and slower songs on her album are the best ones.

Supersonic

I am shocked that Chandelier is only 1x platinum.

REALLY?

Chandelier sold like 90.000 copies in its peak weeks and managed to get a top 10 with that

You can't make a market care about an artist they don't want to. God the industry is trying to jam all these female artists down our throat. Just because women are doing better than they used to, doesn't mean every woman will be good if you market her correctly.

So true. Replicating the same marketing for every female artist won't necessarily work. Plus, only so many female artists can be successful simultaneously. Even with one on a break and the other's single success waning, Rihanna and Katy are the front-runners. Beyonce is very close behind, then there's Gaga, niche act Nicki and newcomer Ariana. Pink's off the grid for the moment with her folk project. So that's 6 names. There's no way any more pop acts can be successful at the minute, particularly if they're women. Oversaturation of the market and all. Women may rule pop music, but there is a heirarchy and many will fall. It's hard enough to get females to buy another female's album (ironic, huh?) but even harder to get them to buy an album by an artist that's fairly new, not had very much promotion and has a very "love it or hate it" personality. And in the US's case, it's hard to make them care about non-American/Canadian acts.

You've hit the nail on the head. Too big a break (Alive wasn't released in the US) and not enough promotion to relaunch her over there. And yes, I bet people who hear her songs on the radio don't have a clue who she is or want to find out (actually, a lot of people thought Domino was Katy's song and when I hear it initially, I do for a second think it's Katy). Her name just doesn't spark an interest. Your method of getting her a fanbase is exactly right - she's got to start out small and do mall tours and then theatre tours until she's built up a decent name for herself where she can lead a halfway decent album campaign. The problem is that she and her label don't want to put in the hard work. Seeing as she'd already achieved two solo top tens in the US (Price Tag and Domino), starting from the bottom would seem like a counter-productive move and pushing her career back rather than forwards. But you can't just snap your fingers and get US success when you're not even from there. She got those hits because she had just debuted and it was all a bit of a fluke. She can't expect to get that success back without properly trying.

She has a strong voice, a banging amazon-body, symmetric face - but she just hasn't got much charisma at all. No personality.
