Bloody 64,631
Statements like Nicki's are the kind of stuff that is warping and poisoning feminism. It's the reason why so many feminists are turning towards raunch culture as a form of validation and don't realise how much of a contradiction this all is towards the feminist concept of getting out from under male control. How can you be a strong, independent woman if you're conforming to mens needs and preferences? We're kidding ourselves if we think women style themselves s-xually and put on s-xual performances for their own enjoyment. I think the concept of raunch culture as a feminist notion must have been dreamed up by a misogynist man who's rubbing his hands with glee that so many women were gulliable enough to fall for it (while getting a naked lapdance). ย Let's talk through the parts of the song/video that are problematic: ย 1. Nicki raps about dating a dope dealer who she's only with because he makes so much money and "he live in a palace, bought me Alexander McQueen, he was keeping me stylish." So, basically, she's a gold-digger and has no qualms about dating a d--g dealer, as long as she's kept in the lap of luxury. This is the exact opposite of feminism. A feminist would rather earn her own money to buy what she wants, not be some trophy wife who leeches off her husband's money. 2. Nicki raps about dating a coke dealer for the same reasons listed above. She even clarifies his dealings are what attracted her to him "I let him hit it cos he slang c-----e." She then reveals that she basically uses their s-x as a bribe by adding: "and when we're done, I make him buy Balmain." So, basically, she's nothing but a live-in prostitute who doesn't care that she's dating a man who's probably responsible for many c-----e-related illnesses and overdoses. Once again, the opposite of feminism. There is nothing empowering about using s-x to get what you want. The other person, the one with the money, is the one with the power in this situation. 3. Nicki and her backing dancers put on a very s-xual performance throughout the video, including twerking, pelvis thrusting, spreading their legs, slapping asses and miming an ass grab. While this kind of thing may be fun to do, there is nothing feminist about it. Men find this kind of thing very titillating and they know it. They are doing this for the approval of men, not for themselves. This is not helping women, it is holding them to the same expectation they have for decades - that women are there as decoration and titillation. 4. Nicki acts out some visual innuendo of penises and c*mshots. She is on the verge of deep-throating a banana, cuts up a bit, puts some cream on top and seductively licks it and then squirts herself with cream all over her bare chest while maintaining an orgasmic expression. Again, nothing more than a performance for the male gaze and puts pressure on women to conform to certain s-xual acts to be desirable. 5. Nicki gives a shout out to other big bootied women in the club, but then says the unforgivable "f*ck those skinny b*tches." This is definitely the opposite of feminism. Women should be supportive of all shapes and sizes of fellow women and certainly never imply that someone is a b*tch because of their body type. For curvy women to put down skinny women is not evening the score, it just makes things worse. 5. She gives Drake a lapdance, though whose decision it was to initiate it is uncertain. Nicki doesn't gain any money before or after and Drake never touches her, but once again, this scene is nothing about s-xual exhibitionism for the male gaze once again and holds women to a very restrictive idea of s-xuality. ย All in all, this song and video is one of the worst examples of feminsim I have ever seen (and then there's all those awful instances of d--g glamorisation). And what saddens me is that so many people don't see it this way. It just goes to show how toxic raunch culture truly is on society. There is nothing empowering about relying on someone else for money, prostituting yourself in exchange for things and stripping/dancing for people you don't even know. And that's not just for women, it's for men too. If men trotted out these things as male empowerment, they'd be laughed out the room. So, why do women see these things as female empowerment? ย ย ย

We're kidding ourselves if we think women style themselves s-xually and put on s-xual performances for their own enjoyment. ย Being s-xy is a kind of power - just like people enjoy feeling charming, smart, or high class. All of these involve some kind of social evaluation (impressing others), but are desired for their own sake. ย Why is it bad to please "the male gaze." A lot of women enjoy getting the reaction of arousing men. It makes them feel strong and admired. Sex is mutually pleasurable, not a sacrifice. ย The only way to be fully "strong and independent" in our s-xuality, it seems, would be to focus purely on masturbation. Then you need not give a f*ck what the opposite s-x thinks.

Sex is mutually pleasurable, not a sacrifice. ย The only way to be fully "strong and independent" in our s-xuality, it seems, would be to focus purely on masturbation. Then you need not give a f*ck what the opposite s-x thinks. ย I wouldn't say being s-xy is a form of power, it's just a personality trait. Some have it, some don't. All of us, bar as-xuals, have a level of s-xuality and s-x drive within us, so it's hardly a special trait that only a favoured few have, so why should such an inherent part of being human be seen as a power? By calling it a power, it suggests only a few people have it, which isn't the case. ย Pleasing the male gaze is not bad in and of itself. It's just the circumstances surrounding it that make it good or bad. Pleasing the male gaze of a stranger in a public place in exchange for money? Not good. Pleasing the male gaze of a lover in a private place for free? Good. The former is a forced s-xuality, the latter is a natural s-xuality. And I'm pro-natural s-xuality. Sex is not a commodity, it should not be bought and sold, it's a natural part of life and being human that we should enjoy for free with no societal expectations placed on it. We should do it because we want to, not because we think we have to or are paid to. Sex and s-xuality can be so clinical and even dangerous if not treated correctly. I'm not supportive of any kind of s-xual expression that involves payment, business and hurt. ย The thing is, women are held to different s-xual standards than men and I don't just mean the whole "women can't sleep around like men can and be accepted for it." I mean that women are expected to bend over backwards (literally in some cases) to s-xually please a man, a pressure that men don't and have never felt. Women are expected to look good at all times and do crazy stuff in bed whereas men can just be au naturel and lie back and be pleasured. Why does Cosmopolitan magazine always have s-x tips for women to follow to "blow his mind," but there's never a reversed article in mens magazines? Females are taught right from when they are children to be presentable and look good for others and this translates as they get older into pleasing men, conforming to their every whim and desire. Men don't feel the need to parade themselves s-xually like women do, yet so many women don't stop to question this. I'm a big subscriber to the belief of: "If a man doesn't have to do this, then a woman shouldn't either." It's ridiculous how modern society still places a man's s-xual needs above a womans and provides endless options for s-x-starved males while women get basically nothing. Apart from the occasional Chippendale show rolling into town (which most women find hilarious/embarrassing rather than arousing) and extremely rare overpriced male escorts, women don't have a lot of options if they want to pay for a s-xual performance. Men have it all - strip clubs open every day and night, s-x chat lines, webcam girls, massage parlours, a huge array of prostitutes to suit every wallet size...Not that I'm for any of this, but where's the options for women? This is why I can't stand society's attitude to s-x: it treats mens needs as superior and expects women to do all the work. You know, the attitudes from centuries ago. The more things change, the more they stay the same, as they say. It's always been the case that men appreciate being the male gazer, but suddenly become uncomfortable when they are the object of a female's gaze. Maybe they should just stop for a moment and wonder how we feel when the same thing happens to us. Nicki's video is a showcase of all the s-xual expectations that are put on women and that is not empowering or good for women.

Men would gladly flaunt their bodies for money or for fun is there was a bigger female market for it. Maybe people with average bodies don't want them scrutinized, but surely many stage performers, male and female, like showing off and being gazed upon. Justin Bieber and 1D would both "do more work" is it was needed to attract screaming girl fans. ย Females are taught right from when they are children to be presentable and look good for others and this translates as they get older into pleasing men, conforming to their every whim and desire. ย ย Sure this is annoying for many women. But this crazy scrutiny of appearance is forced on female celebs anyway, so they might as well make the most of their allure. If I had to diet, exercise, and obsess over clothes and make-up to maintain pop star standards, I'd want to have the fun of flaunting my body too.
