It's so weird how nobody's stopping this, it's obvious overcompensation.

This is why I love the UK charts so much: they are just based on sales and the competition is always very clear. There're some problems surely with the singles chart based on sales, most notable is that some promo singles or random singles like Justin Bieber once would chart extremely high, but I love the idea.

With the Billboard chart rules, I have an idea that  radio and streaming are here to add the entertainment element to the charts, to make them more fancy, competitive and unpredictable. From all the elements, only digital sales seem to be reasonable enough, as the idea of someone paying to download the song represents the loyalty to the song (it doesn't take lots of money), esp. in the age of internet piracy.

Radio has some disadvantages, like the DJs/radio directors control over what is going to be played, and the idea that a song needs to fit special requirements in order to be successful on the radio.

The main disadvantage of streaming is the fact that with viral videos huge share of views and streaming may come from the artist fanbase, which doesn't by any means establish the popularity of the song. Marry the night opened with great number of views in the first week which with the current chart rules would have pushed her to the top 10 definitely. Another thing is that many views come from same people who re-watch the video several times, and that also doesn't contribute to the popularity really much. From all the three elements of the chart streaming is the most controversial as of now.  Why don't they decide to count how many times the music video for the song is played on music TV channels  :derpga:

Its nothing bad to have fans to play a video. That shows that there is an interest for the song / video. Fans also buy albums and they are counted. Only a small number of views from one person are counted, so you cant say that this comes from re-watch ( as spamming). Radios also replay their songs. Streaming is actually a very good part of the chart. Its more accurate then radios, that almost every time are late with catching up with a song. Avicii is the best example as is no 1 on radio, but just got out of top 10 on Itunes. Blurred lines is still top 20 on radio.

When MTV was really popular, they wanted to include that in their formula, but it never happened. I think it should have happened. 1m people watching on MTV had a better impact than 1m people listen to the radio.

Having more components of an chart is generally a very good idea. Why? People can listen to a song on radio, can watch it on tv and at the end they will even buy it : as an album. That would not impact at all the songs chart, if it will be only album sales. Actually, was an interesting part in th 90s, when Billboard didnt count songs that werent sold as singles. They were no 1 on radio, but they never were on Hot 100. Now, this anomaly cant happen anymore, which just shows how good Billboard chart actually is.

WB had a deserved no 1 this week, that just shows its real impact. Every artist and every song has advantages. A Miley Cyrus song can sell / get to radio much harder than an Adele one, but the streaming factor helps rebalancing the things.

excluding streaming would be a ridiculous mistake, as it very much is the future

spotify et al. already are the rule, not the exception in countries like Sweden, Finland, Norway

The Hot 100 is the most honest and complete chart tbh... The others aren't 100% accurate.  :manicure:

Radio Audience also comes from the same people, you know that Roar's 220M AI are not 220M people that heard the song right ?  It's the same with the Views ...  The difference Is that you choose what to watch on Youtube, while DJs choose what you're going to hear on radio, sure you can request a song but still..

Guys we have a Japanese charts thread now. It would be better to discuss those things there to create some movements to other threads too and also keep this one more on-topic.
