Why would the album sales become lower by next year? Hon, I don't know if you know, but in 2012 BTW was still selling over 40k a week on average in the first quarter while the last hit was in June 2011. Sales don't just simply stop at some point :rip: it doesn't matter if an album has already been bought by many, it will just be bought by more people. As long as ARTPOP is selling 50k a week I don't see a reason to release Part II, and if the fourth single becomes a hit, 70k/week is very easy. Then she has a fifth single, and if that becomes a hit too she can keep selling 60k/week. Then the holidays season comes and she can just keep selling 50k/week without a big hit. In the end, if she sold 90k/week on average for a whole year, she already has 4,5M sales.

And why is everybody so confident in Part II, she actually needs a smash hit for it to do well. Look what happened with Justin Timberlake.

I'll tell you why. Although the sales are decent, they are not on the level of the megastar that she is, and the label sees it that way.

They are lawyers and accountants, worse than Wall Street. They ONLY look at numbers.

Also, let me remind you that majors sign artists who are a gamble and spend $ on them and 99% of those signings are a minus sign financially.

It is acts like LG who pay the bills for everyone.

In the end it's all about the song, the hit, or at least it is in their eyes, and also the radio because although internet has changed the game somewhat, the big numbers are still dependent on radio (according to them, again).

Hits drive tour sales.

At the moment they are concerned because her fanbase doesn't seem to be growing and expanding. Yes she has an incredible fan base, but it needs to GROW to make money.

Not in America. Monster went #1 without a video here. So did Roar. The video did nothing for Uncle.

I didn't know Roar went #1 before the video?

Anyways, in Europe and Asia, videos are very important. They get played on TV, people talk about them, sometimes they're commercials. Roar had a lyric video by the way, which was a commercial here.

My other observation is: LG has strayed from her 'iconic' vocals and vocal delivery. She developed a signature style with her earlier hits: a bit monotonous, but it stood out and really worked with her lower register. Since then she has branched out, which is understandable when you're a vocalist, and she has wanted to show the world that she has the pipes. All well and good, but to me, when she sings higher, she sounds like a music theater vocalist. Not a bad thing, but it takes me out of the 'pop space' she creates.

The role of the producer, IMO only, would be to bring her back to basic songwriting. I mean basic in a good way - and also bring her back vocally, at least for a couple of songs, where the general audience will recognize her voice/delivery.

When PF came out, her voice and delivery were unmistakable and unique. Clear, lower tones, a bit spoken, with a very interesting inflection.

She then mostly abandoned it and it's certainly not as present on this record at all.

I am not saying an artist should be stuck in a mode for ages, but that is another one of her issues. Once you find a good thing, you polish it and stick to it for a while. The problem for artists who hit it big is that they become impatient and want to show the world 'look, ma! no hands! I can do this too!' that they're no one trick pony. Part of that impatience is that THEY have been doing it for years so they're kind of over it. But it's not the same for the wider audience. I think her signature looks/vocals could have lasted longer and taken over the world in a much more lasting fashion. I think BTW was too soon in its themes, personally.

You've brought up so many excellent points in your posts. I'm really glad that you're here because it's really helped me put a finger on several things that I had issue with, but could not properly pinpoint.

DWUW is victim to circumstance. If the song was released another time of the year and there was no video drama preventing delays, the song would have been a solid performer. Such a shame :(

Of course the fanbase isn't expanding. She's not used Twitter for more than a week now, she hasn't promoted properly, she hasn't had big hits and she tries to attract the wrong kind of GP - the straight guys who wouldn't spend money on Gaga anyways, she has to attract to teen girls and gay guys to expand her fanbase and I don't think Interscope realizes that all the time.

Most of the fans became fans because of her performances (Paparazzi VMA 2009, Telephone BRIT 2010, her acoustic Poker Face performances) and her videos (Poker Face, Bad Romance, Telephone, Judas in Latin America). This era she's barely done promotion (only in 3 countries) and has only had one video, and of course you're not expanding your fanbase with that.

Thanks! I find it interesting and useful for myself to dissect this stuff because it helps me in my own work.

I would also consider another point - don't kill me here - but my opinion is that the current era is also difficult for the Lady G because she may be going through it sober, and it's relatively new to her. I have known many addicts (the biz is full of them) and let me tell you, when you are freshly sober with no 'little helpers', it can be very difficult. Just like if for many years you learned to 'relax' with booze, try going sober and relaxing naturally - in the beginning it's incredibly hard. Cocaine is used by many in this biz and it's the ultimate '**ck yeah I can do it, get out of my way I'm the best' kind of high. If you take it for years to boost self confidence and then go sober, you're in trouble because now you have to get that persona back or develop a new one... and perhaps it's not the same one. Not easy, especially if you're female.

it was great promo for the song...

But it would have help the song even more if the US fans would have watch the video from The Voice channel that has like 300k if I remmeber, instead of this.
