Hi, I'm new here, but have been lurking around since early October. I've been a fan of Gaga's since she began with TF, as she exclipsed the world with her first hits from that album. I remember the first performance I had ever seen her do was Paparazzi at the 2009 VMA's. She was incredible and she was 'shocking'. She was a popstar the world hadn't seen in years. I remember going to school, talking to my family etc and everyone was talking about her. Did you hear Lady Gaga's new song? Did you see her performance? Did you see what she wore!? Everyone sang Poker Face and Paparazzi and I still hear it every week by someone. By the way I live in Canada.. She single handedly brought back the art of making music videos, which was quickly going down hill. Her videos were more interesting and exciting to watch; like small films. She was the popstar that had everything going for her and everyone loved her.

People may compare that level of popularity to Miley Cyrus, but that is not a true comparison.. Miley is known for all the wrong reasons. She is the laughing stock of the world, and most people make fun of her. Most people I know don't like the song Wrecking Ball itself, it is just popular because of the music video. I really don't like the song and never have. Lady Gaga was popular because of admiration and because of the amazing music she was making. Miley will have to keep up the antics or go back to her old ways (Which is highly unlikely), to maintain the level of popularity she has at this time.

The Fame Monster was what cemented Gaga as the new Queen of Pop. The videos were great (Bad Romance and Telephone) and controversial (Alejandro). I believe ARTPOP truly is the continuation of TF and TFM. When she put out Born This Way, she was still riding on the effect of the TFM. Massive sales in the first week, and a huge first single. But she began to become too preachy for the public, and her style wasn't as good as previous eras. Her music (for the general public) was mediocre. Hardly anyone remembers any song other than Born This Way and The Edge of Glory. This era killed her popularity.

Being the very intelligent person she is, she returned to produce the ARTPOP album, which in my opinion is my favourite and could be the general public's favourite if they listen to it. (Apart from a few misses... aka Jewels & Drugs). Unfortunately, she took the advice of Jimmy Lovine, whom lately has been giving really bad advice to his artists and if anyone's seen him on American Idol, bad choices for the contestants whenever he chooses their songs. He chose Applause as the lead single. Not the best song for the general public. People I talk to everyday still make fun of the song saying "Applause, Applause, Applause" in a mocking way. People think that is what ARTPOP consists of. I let a few people listen to a few songs, (DWUW, G.U.Y. GYPSY & VENUS) at separate times. If any one of those songs were the lead single, we would have gotten HUGE album sales. That's the mistake of this era. Everyone I let listen, LOVES G.U.Y. the beat is awesome and they really like the other three too. Venus is liked for it's lyrics. It could be viral with an awesome video.

At this point, DWUW is doing fine, but personally I think it should be higher on the US Itunes. I think because DWUW was in the late teens at the time of the AMA's, was the cause of not getting a big boast, whereas Say Something was near the Top 10 and as soon as it hit the Top 10 it shot to #1. If DWUW got into the Top 10 after her performance, it would have gotten to #1 also. It's only saving grace (and maybe this era's) is the music video. It needs to be good and it needs to be viral and promoted like crazy. I have faith in Terry Richardson for controversy but also a little worried that it will not be of Gaga standards. The Radio updates for the song are really great, and I think with a good video, it can be a monster hit.

I predicted the re-rise of Daft Punk this year, as well as Blurred Lines and Thrift Shop so I like to think I know popular music, so I'm hoping I'm right about DWUW.

Sorry for writing so much but I wanted to have my opinion out and share it. I probably won't be posting very much, but I really like to read your posts.

P.S. What happened to two frequent posters on here? Americano and jhony? Or am I allowed to ask that lol

Whispering

I think it's just the realization that just the name Lady Gaga used to be able to push to Platinum pretty easily. Now is a different story. It's kind of a bitter reality. Sales aren't everything though. She's still one hell of a performer.

CD sales, as a whole, are way down. CD sales for pop girls are even worse. Things go in cycles and the era Gaga brought in five years ago is on its way out. It's all about the ballads, folk/country sounding songs, and alt. rock crossovers. I'm surprised Applause did as well as it did, tbh. (although I loved it!) People are going towards quirky voices or folk sounding music and the males are ruling album sales. It's probably going to stay that way, until Adele and Swift release albums again.

Things change, cycles happen and Gaga is one of many that is affected by the changes happening.

I agree. It's not like Katy and Miley are torching Gaga. They are all selling about the same if you look at the big picture.
