Recently, I sat down to interview him, and he kindly obliged, even presenting me with a never before released version of his remix of 'You And I', especially for this countdown! Interview with Klimis Ioannidis by ChicaSkas for GagaDaily.com December, 2013 ChicaSkas: "Where did you first hear about Lady Gaga, and what is it about her music that made you want to remix it?" Klimis Ioannidis: "It was just when "Just Dance" came out. I have to admit that I didn't "jump" to it at first hear, it was a bit weird for my "then" standards but after some listens, I decided that I liked the track and I'll give a listen to her whole album. Once again I wasn't instantly in love with the rest [of the] tracks, it was again outside of what I was expecting to hear so I needed some extra time to adjust. So once I was familiar with her sound and I was officially a fan of hers I thought that she was an acoustically irregular artist, and there would be people that could have a difficult time familiarizing themselves with her sound or her persona as a whole, so I made a plan that with the first chance I'd have, I'd remix her and do something completely different with her, like how her music would sound in a parallel universe, let's say a re-introduction." ChicaSkas: "When you sit down with a track (not just Gaga) do find you start more on the sounds that are already in the track as a starting point, or go based on the message or words in the track first?" Klimis Ioannidis: "I may sound a bit crazy to some people but have a strict (old-school) way I work with tracks I get to remix. I give a listen to the original song and I start to hear and read at the same time the lyrics, then I rewind and I pin-point the standout phrases from the lyrics (or even music "phrases") so I'll try to make a vision or a feeling of the track. If the lyrics have an actual meaning (other than fun, etc.) I try to translate the feeling into music. Since we're talking about Lady Gaga, I guess a good example would be when I got to remix "You And I". I won't lie, I didn't like the track at first [listen] compared to "Heavy Metal Lover" and I thought that the track was really not suitable for remixes. So I put it on the side for the moment and I finished "Heavy Metal Lover" first which came so naturally to me, I was literally overflowing with ideas to that one, I had every single detail in my mind since my first listen. When I finished "Heavy Metal Lover" I decided to give one more chance to "You And I" and I'm so thankful I did. I sat down, put the multitrack on, and I said "OK, What's Gaga trying to say to me with this track? What were her feelings when she was writing it?". So I said, she generally talks about "that one" person she is fully and (unconditional) in love with and her world makes no sense without him. So how could I translate that into music? After dealing with the vocal rhythm and re-taking the vocals to a state that would work a 4-on-floor rhythm (it seemed to work better without the backing vocals as well), pasting the vocals to my idea was sounding perfect, I feel in love with it, I knew that it was a remix that would stay in my heart and so it did after it got fully produced. ChicaSkas: "Anything from ARTPOP that stands out to you, or that is a fave so far?" Klimis Ioannidis: "That's tough! I'll say a Top 3 that comes first to my mind! In no particular order (and apart from Applause), Donatella, Fashion! and Gypsy stand out for me. I'll be mad If one of these won't become a single." ChicaSkas: "Would you consider remixing anything from ARTPOP, officially through Interscope or unofficially for your fans?" Klimis Ioannidis: "(Rolling eyes with a smile) Is that even a question?! (waves at Interscope's management and makes a "call me" sign!) I've been having something in my mind (maybe more than just my mind, let's say my iMac) but I don't know if it will ever reach the public and under which conditions, kinda the same story with Heavy Metal Lover... ...kinda. Meh." ChicaSkas: "Do you make compilations or mixtapes available for sale where fans of your works can buy them?" Klimis Ioannidis: "I put stuff (that I'm allowed to) on my soundcloud page and recently I'm in the process of making available my works through LegitMix so I can make life easier to people who would like to have my works (klimisioannidis.legitmix.com) More things will be available slowly-slowly...!"
