PoshLife 16,929
BTW did her a gay icon, that's too bad because for people being a Little Monster = being gay. Which is not reality... I'm a big fan of Lady Gaga (since day 1) and I'm straight... The main part of gay fans loved her music since BTW era, but at the very start (TF &TFM) she was not a gay icon That is not true though. When she accepted her VMA in 2009, way before BTW, she said "this is for God and for the Gays." She marched in the National Equality March before BTW came out, as well. And she organized the call-in on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" back in 2010. She has been a supporter of the gay community - doing the things that led to her being called a "gay icon" - since before BTW. On OP, I don't really care about the difference between "icon" and "supporter." As long as she supports, then that's all I ask.

Deacon 5
Very weird. How is she not an iconic figure for the gay community? It's not something she decides, it's something that is measured by her influence. Why are y'all defending this so passionately? It's such a weird comment She's not saying that she isn't a gay icon necessarily, but that she doesn't view or call herself one like so many tend to believe she does. Didymus 34,379
It's still an awkward answer. Anyway, I guess it's good for her that she tries to strip herself from her labels. She's not saying that she isn't a gay icon necessarily, but that she doesn't view or call herself one like so many tend to believe she does.
Ladle Ghoulash 16,944
I absolutely agree. I think that she is a wonderful advocate and voice in the gay community, but, I don't think that it's useful to label someone and restrain them to just being a "gay icon" (not that it isn't valuable, but, I just disagree with the concept of labeling in general, as I find it to be a very closed-minded way of thinking). John The Gypsy 0
I don't even get why Born This Way is thought of as a song meant about gays when it mainly addresses anyone dealing with their insecurities. It's not her fault the media and the public choose to put their focus on just one thing and ignoring the picture as a whole.

It's such a weird comment I think what she's saying is that she feels as though it limits her. Gaga isn't about labels. It's not that she's saying anything negative about being a gay icon, but rather, about being labeled at all.
