agreed!!

also not to forget the "Erotica" era where Madonna suffered a huge backlash from media and GP and her next album "Bedtime Stories" opened with very low numbers. But after that "Ray of Light" came along......then again with "American Life" and so on...

also not to forget that during 1989-1991 Paula Abdul had 6 consecutive number #1's and Whitney Houston during 1985-1987 had 7 consecutive number #1's....Madonna was still the #1 pop star without many number ones...all i'm saying is that numbers don't matter that much as long as the music is enjoyable....Who is influential/creative/pushing boundaries etc..we all know....it was certainly not Paula or Whitney...and neither is Katy.....

Absolutely agree!

I used Ray of Light as an example of an album debuting at number 2 and being successful.

If ARTPOP fails Gaga will have to go and make an album to win back the public. I hate using Madonna as an example but she is just as polarising as Lady Gaga.

Madonna released Bedtime Stories even though it debuted at Number 3 [or 2 - I think 3] it was a gradual and consistent seller. She didn't try to be too controversial and really focused on the music. "Secret" kicked off that release beautifully then it was followed by "Take A Bow". Take A Bow is an example of a huge hit radio wise  [7 weeks at number 1 but didn't even go platinum!] but it allowed "Bedtime Story" to sell at a pretty good rate.

GUYS IT IS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD!

IF SHE FAILS - SUPPORT HER DON'T GIVE UP.

I HAVE BEEN MOCKED OVER THE YEARS ESPECIALLY DURING EROTICA/SEX/BODY OF EVIDENCE but now Erotica is looked upon fondly!

DWUW video better be good, imagine a single launched at the same time as the album not making top 10.

If that happens, hopefully they choose better singles for the Lady Gaga brand, like Aura.  Who wants to buy Lady Gaga singing like Christina.

Clearly a lot of people...it's #16 on iTunes with little airplay and rising, and was critically and commercially accepted upon it's release :usrs:

Who cares if it debuts at 1/2/3 or 100?

I am a Madonna fan - I don't love Lady Gage but I don't mind some of her songs.

Madonna has definitely had her ups and downs career wise and even Ray Of Light her awesome album that went 4x Platinum debuted at number 2.

Why is everybody having meltdowns?

It shows that many of you are shallow and only support Gaga if she is number 1 or has stellar sales.

A true fan would stick by Lady Gaga.

I love Madonna even after the Hard Candy crappy album. I like MDNA but I absolutely don't love it.

I think the gp takes issue with Gaga because she set the bar too high for this album - if she shut her mouth about all the artistic crap and just relaxed with the music she would not have pissed so many people off.

Finally, it's great to mock artists when your favourite is "slaying" [i hate that word] but your favourite act can't always be number 1!

I think I've raised valid points without being too critical - I'm just trying to tell you guys to take a breather it's not the end of the world!

Another thing, judging by the relatively low sales I don't think this album will have longevity. I didn't say it was crappy I just think it will struggle. I actually don't mind "applause" and "dope."

You are wonderful

I want to thank the person a few posts up (id quote you but my tablet doesn't like to let me lol) that posted something about Madonna, it really puts things into perspective and I am not worried about gaga. I think she will be fine in the long run.

Didn't troy say that they were aiming for longevity this time around? Unlike btw's 7 month run. And that release weeks promo would focus on two weeks instead of just one? Maybe they want to lessen the drop between first and second week sales and she will do some actual promo next week? :)

Ahhh #1!! Keeping the positive vibes together with her. She's never looked so damn cute today and yesterday at H&M opening. I literally said that's my queen right there

I think that Gaga is laughing at all of us, once all this low first weeking selling is part of her plan to have more number one hits this era + the best selling album of 2014 whit its longevity.

I think the biggest **** up in the music industry this year is Interscope putting Gaga's release the week after Eminem. Like how stupid can you be? Someone is getting fired. Lol

Lord!! i remember that period!!! If you said that were Madonna fan you would be stigmatised.....but then as you said people forget and label the era as classic, cult or anything else.....Enjoy the music people.....imagine if twitter existed back then !!!  :flop:

Just one more Madonna comparison to show the similarities, ease the pain and make a point....Sales of her 1st album :5 mil....sales of her 2nd: 10 mil....sales of her third: 7 mil,...sales of her 4rth: 5 mil.....and so on....a decline in sales in her more iconic albums...did it mean that she was over? nope ...just all the casual-judgemental fans/GP made room for her real genuine fan base..... :)

You all do realize that out of her 12 studio albums, only 4 of Madonnas albums have debuted at #1, correct?

And she didn't have her first #1 until 2001.

You really all need to calm your tits.

Are you talking about the ones that debuted at number 1?

Because she had 3 numbers 1s before that. She has  had a total of  8 number 1 albums. Her last 5 [studio albums] have debuted at number 1. Like A Virgin, True Bliue and Like A Prayer all reached number 1 but didn't debut at number 1.

True Blue is and remains her biggest world wide seller. So her first 3 albums all increased in sales on a world wide level. True Blue definitely needs to be re-certified but it won't beat Like A Virgins US sales.

It's just a different market now. Most artists didn't debut at #1 before and albums debuted lower and climbed later on as they received more exposure. Now, it's all about the first week sales and frontloading everything. If you don't get #1 the first week, you won't get it later on.

Needless to say, I think, if handled correcty, ARTPOP could go Platinum by next year.
