Scenario B. I've said this before, but Gaga is the only mainstream artist of whom I'm a fan. Can you imagine if I had meltdowns every time a single from The Decemberists didn't chart or Iron and Wine didn't make a video?

I don't care about charts or popularity or any of that. Yes, I want Gaga to be successful, but the main reason I'm here is because of the music.

Scenario B is how Gaga's been right from the start. It's not changing anytime soon. Taking risks and not conforming to industry standards are the kind of things that separate her from her peers. It's the kind of thing that makes a legend.

SCENARIO B:

An album that is the inversion of the above. The singles are Top 10/20 hits that get moderately good reviews. The album goes #1 but doesn't sell as high as her previous work. The reviews all around are polarizing: some great, some bad, some mixed. The "GP" still has some harsh words for her, but there are also plenty of those that love her too. Some days it seems like she's on top of the world, other days it seems like she's the world's punching bag. The videos and releases come out late, some of her collaborators or members of her team depart or say things that we don't agree with, aspects of the "era" just seem sort of "messy". BUT: the music is fantastic. It pushes the envelope, sonically and lyrically, while still very pop and fun for the public. It is forward thinking, and very very "weird" and characteristically Gaga, and yet the choruses are still catchy, sing-a-long choruses. Meanwhile, the imagery is shocking, intense, edgy, and controversial, further fueling the public's polarizing view of her.

Even this is subject to opinion. It is my sincerest opinion that Born This Way was more what you described than ARTPOP. As much as I love ARTPOP, it is safe in terms of where Gaga went with Born This Way. But I will say most of the fans on this site aren't here to see her success but are here for other reasons. The problem is that with liking someone so much for their artistic vision and output, you want to see them achieve a high amount of success with the public. Gaga's always had haters, throughout the fame and monster eras, I would know because I was one of them for a short period, it's just now they are more apparent, in part because of her recognition of it, and also because she has lost support from the chart-stan fans that probably supported her during TF/TFM/early BTW eras.

So I guess what I am saying is that this feels like a combination of Situation A and B in terms of the way you described it musically/artistically. The reception is more like B, but I think that's the whole point of Art and Pop.

But seeing the DWUW video would be nice.

On top of it all I was listening to 'Let It Go' by Idina Menzel from Frozen. Made it all the more epic! Thank you for writing this. You took a lot of the words write out of my mouth.

I'm here for whatever she chooses to do, but she can push the envelope and still have a planned out era. I don't ever want her to stop pushing the boundaries of her talent though!

I am all for B when it delivers in terms of quality and message, which I personally don't feel is the case with ARTPOP. It feels like this album was supposed to much more of an A.

But I also don't think it has to be one way or the other. You can take risks with your work and be innovative, and still have everything polished and properly planned out.
