Bt1 5,213
Who says real art should be appreciated immediately and widely by critics? Especially middle-aged male critics with genre prejudices?. It would be easier for Gaga is she would play within the rules of an established game like indie rock or whatever. Teenage Dream had a Metacritic score under 60 and got a Grammy nom. Lana won a Brit award despite a metacritic score worse than any Gaga album. Some of Kanye's best reviewed works have done worst in sales and radio airplay. Its not only about the reviews. Its about their effect. If something ( a movie, an album) gets good reviews and that something arrive at people with the word good, amazing and not just ok, eh, people, if they like one song, one performance, one something, will buy it more easily. Americano 31,061
Music and movies are not the same. Music is all over the internet and radio for people to access on their own, movies are not. You need to go proactively buy overpriced movie tickets, which is why people read reviews. Some of the most popular music in the past 20+ years has been HORRIBLY reviewed.
Luc 4,775
Reviews are quite important tbh. If you know that there are other people who enjoy the same music too you'll be more likely to share it with others. That's just how it is. Most people don't want to have the unpopular opinion or be considered gay. Word of mouth can do so much to sales, why else do you think Dark Horse is doing so well? It's even in the Top 50 (top 10 I think?) Viral songs on Spotify.

bumblebee 2,528
Its not only about the reviews. Its about their effect. If something ( a movie, an album) gets good reviews and that something arrive at people with the word good, amazing and not just ok, eh, people, if they like one song, one performance, one something, will buy it more easily. The idea with music is very different! 1) People go to cinema mostly for the experience. It's an old tradition of watching a movie on a wide big screen with crazy loud sound. Most people don't have an IMAX 3D in their house/apartment. So they'll have to pay for the ticket anyway. People who just wanna see the movie often can't find an HQ movie in internet till a DVD/Bluray is released. So if they wanna watch the movie as soon as possible they will alsoo have to pay for the cinema ticket. People often read reviews before the cinema when it's just a way of spending the evening and they don't really care what to watch. 2) With music, it's very different. If you are interested in an album, you can go to YouTube/Spotify and listen to all the tracks online and then decide: to buy or not to buy. Music is also an experience, but it's a long duration experience. People listen to songs multiple times, while they don't usually watch movies on repeat. And they can always illegally download the album once it's released or even before. It's not like they have to wait for DVD/Bluray.

You need to go proactively buy overpriced movie tickets, which is why people read reviews. Some of the most popular music in the past 20+ years has been HORRIBLY reviewed. I would add that music reviewers (middle aged male old rock fans or hipsters) are further removed from a pop musician's core audience (under 25, majority female and gay) audience. So pop fans likely don't put a lot of trust in such revews. Reviews are helpful is you share genre tastes, or discoveriing new bands, or for stan bragging rights. Gaga just needs to hold her own with past Metatcritic score, so haters can't use that against her. I think she will.
