Didymus 34,379
I'm really surprised that so many people love it. For me, it's like objectively hideous (except for the amazing statue, that is), so I'm quite happy to see that Gaga did please many more than I initially would have thought

Millennial 0
I prefer most of the fan made versions being thrown around. It's just kind of messy for me...I wish it was just chest up without the spread legs. Her face is perfection.

Wheelieben 0
This cover is just like Applause. The more you are exposed to it the more it grows on you. With both the song and the cover my first reactions were mixed but by the next day I realize they are both genius

drbumblenut 48
I love this cover SO MUCH. It's messy and shattered on purpose, but not for nothing. The more I think about it, the more I understand now everything Gaga puts out is "in character." Remember how Gaga stated that the "Yoü and I" video bridged her past and future as an artist? It featured what is quickly becoming an overt motif in her work of mental illness and some sort of ECT treatment. It featured like 5 or 6 different versions of her -- all of them different, all of them her. That's starting to make a lot more sense, and you can trace a lot of visual motifs through her work now (bathtub, mattress on the floor, mental institutions, cages, etc.) The "Marry The Night" video makes certain aspects of this clearer, but it's still hidden behind a few layers of abstraction. When she showed up with the white wig and party chic sound, people took that for the Gaga persona, but Gaga wanted to explode it almost immediately. Gaga has always embraced her mess, even when she hides it behind makeup. She calls attention to the hiding by being camp, or avant garde, or uns-xy, or otherwise destroying what people enjoy about her. Back then, her goal was a punk stunt: to destroy pop culture by making you aware of it. How can you sell a pop commodity that changes by the day, and isn't f***able half the time? She was fire, and her act was a bait-and-switch. She's changed with time, but the mission is the same: to sell you a total mess. But meticulous thought and care goes into the mess. She has a story to tell about a damaged girl who took her damage and rebuilt the shards into a self-reliant woman, without dishonoring either the girl, or the countless other women she needs to become in order to make it through a complicated life. I don't think it's a coincidence that Gaga emphasizes the experiential qualities of her trauma while sidestepping the specifics. Gaga has mastered the art of getting people to talk about themselves when they think they're talking about her. It's a punk stunt with heart. By shoving her mess in our faces, we could start to notice how much we have messiness in common -- in other words, we're all messy. Isn't that great? The ARTPOP cover is a celebration of mess. It's Gaga's mind made visual. I bet if Gaga had three wishes, one of them would be for each of us to get a paintbrush, or photoshop, or a piano, or just a pen and paper, and do her one better by making our own minds into works of art. Well said. I agree with a lot of what you're saying; I see her as a performance artist playing the role of a pop star character, with everything she does from promo photos to album art to her outfits.
