This whole thing definitely sounds like it's trying to become the successor to the VMAs. As they said in the article, YouTube's popularity is dominated by the fact that you can view virtually any song or music video with a simple search and is one huge reason why channels like MTV have had to drift away from increasingly unprofitable music-related programming and invest in cheap reality shows that are more likely to draw viewers, particularly the young ones they aim for. This is their first event like this, so I wouldn't doubt they're making this thing HUGE, especially if they racked up Gaga for the line up. Kia is even backing this up. With Kia and Youtube (and Google of course), this event could be amazing. Just look at the facts about youtube: -More than 1 billion unique users visit YouTube each month -Over 6 billion hours of video are watched each month on YouTubeâ€â€that's almost an hour for every person on Earth, and 50% more than last year -100 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute -70% of YouTube traffic comes from outside the US (Source) Plus, it's more promo to the GP for ARTPOP. Plus, it's not like they are getting Y-list artists like Carly Jae Rapsen or Avril Lavigne. Eminem, Arcade Fire and Gaga are very recognized artists.
