With same-day, you get the video streams + first week sales combined together in one week, thus ensuring a higher debut position on the Hot 100. The downside is that you put you put one of your biggest promo tools (the video) and the single release at the same time, meaning that after the first week (where its sales are going to be higher anyways), you have to rely on performances to keep the song afloat until radio has enough time to build and even then the song is likely to fall until it gets a decent radio audience. With later releases, you can send a song back into the top 10 on iTunes (or have its position in the iTunes top 10 increase), at which time radio will already have built it up decently to help its after-video position stabilize. The downside is that the song might be low enough on iTunes by the time that you release the video that it may be tough to send the song back into the top 10 and radio might already be dropping it. It would be ridiculous to think they don't. They've seen how Applause is doing, it got about 220k in its first week right? And after the VMAs and the video, again about 200k or a little more... None performance or promo would have "saved" Applause. It's doing perfectly fine on the radio, and still top 10 iTunes + it will be 2x platinum in about 2 months, maybe even sooner if she performs it with Venus or something like that.
