That's my point.  Her standard success isn't shooting out consistent number ones.  Her first three singles of her career went number one because she was the new "it" girl.  That's all.  Born This Way was just an unusually popular fluke because she had so much hype coming off of TF and the VMA's.

When you actually take a look at her discography, she isn't a number one artist, but a top 10 artist.  Her first album had three number one's and a top 10.  Her second album had three top 5's.  Her third album had a number one's, a top 5, and two top 10's.

The stan perception that Gaga is a fallen star that used to have an endless string of massive smashes but now can barely scrape a hit is a delusion.  She had three exceptionally popular singles during the first few months of her career, and then has consistently had top 5's and top 10's ever since.

She never was a number one artist.  She's always been a top 10 hit maker.  The media just pumped everyone up during the first few years because she was the latest big thing.

However, I am not looking at it based on chart position but rather overall sales. Her previous lead singles have all sold at least 8 million worldwide, and I don't think you can only dismiss Born This Way's success off as just leftover momentum from TF/TFM hype. Applause should have sold at least 5 million worldwide in my opinion because that seems to be a solid hit that she could accomplish without releasing any music after 2.25 years. But now here we are. You can't just say Applause was a satisfying hit because the truth of the matter is it wasn't. It faded worldwide, you can look right now at a lot of countries' itunes positions right now. Where is Applause? It's doing reasonably well here in the US. But in my opinion the standard she had to pass for applause to not underperform was 3 million in the US and 2 million elsewhere. I think the problem here is the relativity of the word "underperform." You have your standard, in which barely selling 2 million in the US (when all is said and done here) and 1 million elsewhere worldwide, is good for Gaga. I have mine.

britney was rushing to edit her video and even then it was like 4 weeks total editing time, so Venus will need to last at least a few weeks on its own

How'd you know about Britney rushing her video?

I knew you've been keeping up with ha.

Your numbers are way off. She's not going to sell "barely" 2m in the US. Probably more like 2.5M+. And WW it'll be over 4M if not slightly more. So she's gonna be less than 1M from your "goal."

hopefully applause gathered interest from casual listeners and venus is appealing to them

#8. The VMAs had more of an effect on sales than the video iirc

Wehave to have faith in Venus though. It'd be pretty sad if she had to release the video the same day as the single for Venus not to "flop." What is she gonna do for the singles after the album?

yeah that's what i fear. releasing the video the day of would be a big debut but from then on what does she fall on? she betta promote :nails:

****...Venus NEEDS to be released on the 28th so it can debut in the Top 10 :wtf:

That way, hopefully its peak will keep up sane as it bleeds...and bleeds...and bleeds.

I have a feeling Gagz will also promote ARTPOP through the outer space. :legend:

Let them grow on radio....

If Applause is an indication of anything, it's that radio will take time to warm up to her singles. Before the radios support, she had a lot to fall back on. The video. The VMAs. The Commercial. The singles that follow obviously won't have the same advantage that Applause had.

Look at BTW's singles for example. BTW did great/ Judas flopped/ EoG had the advantage of a huge debut before the album/ Y&I stalled until the VMAs/ MTN :rip:

I always believe that judging the success/decline/whatever of any era will never be correct until after it's all said and done. We are still at the beginning of a whole new album era. So much can change, both good AND bad.

I guess what I'm saying is enjoy the charts for the experience, but don't let them govern your image of Lady Gaga. Hindsight is 20/20, and we're not gonna be able to make any judgments on ARTPOP as a whole for quite some time.

Well just have to wait and see. I really hope I am wrong. But in the end who cares about sales. Idk why I am talking about this again. Bring on Venus already. I wanna see it slay.
