But I am going to say that as a lead single, it didn't do great, especially in certain countries, cough* UK/France/Australia *cough. It needed to sell at least 3 million in US to qualify as a big hit and sell at least 2 million elsewhere in the world for a total of 5 million. This had to happen considering it was her lead single and first real new music after 2.25 years. Also, I tend to speak in worldwide terms ;) This is the US Charts discussion, though. Applause did extremely well and did what it needed to do. It got the radio back on board with Gaga and healed a lot of the damage BTW did with casual listeners. Her interviews are a lot more girly and relatable and the song itself is an ear worm. Yes, she didn't truly ditch her weirdness with the single. I feel like her accent and lyrics during the verses and the way she screams the chorus held the song back. But is this track not the perfect balance between mainstream and fan centered? It's obviously mainstream enough to stay in the top 10 for two months, but it's still something very Gaga that monsters love. Of course you're complaining about how it didn't do as well as you'd like, but I doubt you would like the song if she decided to cater completely towards mainstream. While on that subject, I would like to point out that Gaga only had one massively performing era: The Fame. TFM actually wouldn't have been considered that successful had it been separate from The Fame. Additionally, BTW is only feeding off of TF's status. So what I'm getting at is while you say that Applause is underwhelming considering it's Gaga, I would argue that you have over inflated expectations of Gaga. Maybe The Fame was the exception in her career and her "normal" from now on will actually be a 2x platinum top 10 artist. Considering the quality of the music she's producing as a top 10 artist, I don't see how that's a problem. The performance of Applause is much more sustainable as far as a career is concerned, and is arguably what a "normal" lead single chart performance for Gaga actually should be.
