Being a continuous chart it needs to have a way to balance out the new sales coming in at any moment with the sales of the last day or so. The way they do this is at intervals to depreciate the tally for the past sales and add the new sales on. Suppose a song is selling 48K per day continuously (like roughly where Royals is now). If we divide this up into periods of 2 hours like the Kworb updates, then we have 4K sales per each 2 hour period Suppose the depreciation interval is every 2 hours, and we start with the tally representing the past day's sales of 48K. After 2 hours the tally needs to depreciate to 44K so when the new 4K sales is added back in you return to 48K so nothing changes overall. The depreciation you will see is x44/48 = x11/12 or x 0.917. In a whole day that will be 0.917 ^ 12 = 0.35 So if Sirens gets no more sales then it will go down by 65% over the next 24 hours and end up just below Applause if Applause stays selling as it is. When Sirens' pre-order thing took effect earlier, it reached almost the same level on itunes as royals. Since the tally (above from royals) would be around 48K, the tally from Sirens must have reached just below this, say 45K, so it meant there must have been 45K sales of Sirens credited, and in turn that means pre-orders of the corresponding album must also be 45K. We should be able to use this calculation to work out how many pre-orders ARTPOP has when a promo single is released to itunes. Suppose a new single comes out selling at the same rate as the one at #1 on itunes (so e.g. 4K per 2 hr interval vs 48K/day of the #1 song). After 24 hours it can be worked out that the new song will have only reached about 0.6500 on itunes. It would need more days to go higher. We saw that when Royals original track was deleted and how long it took for its album replacement to get back where it was. Also it is why Applause only got to about 0.65 on itunes even though it was selling about the same rate as Roar (in fact slightly more due to the details of the maths) at that instant in time. thanks for the info Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
