Or do you think Applause regained some of the hype and interest in Gaga's music that seemed to be lost at the end of the BTW era? Or is it something to do with the pre-orders of ARTPOP?  I believe APPLAUSE helped a little bit, but the song itself is the demonstration that Gaga's radio+charts power rises significantly when she produces the songs which are not that ELECTRO DANCE POP oriented and can be embraced by several radio formats. Still you can't say it's pure R'n'B as it relies heavily on more electronic sound, but the idea is it: here is the song which is cathcy, sounds good and looks friendly to several radio formats.
