Gov Hooka 8,008
I can't remember who but someone posted a categorical list of her hits that I think is the best way to group and rate/assess her song's performance. Smash hits: Bad Romance Poker Face Just Dance Big Hits: Born This Way Telephone Paparazzi (Some would consider BTW and Telephone smashes but I think you have to pass the 9 million sales mark worldwide for that title) Solid Hits: The Edge of Glory Alejandro You and I Love Game Applause Flops: Judas Marry the Night Eh Eh Applause is a lead single and should not, IMO, be sitting with the other solid hits.--Bottom Line. Considering the star Gaga is, this is not acceptable.

Gov Hooka 8,008
Ok Applause belongs no where near MTN or Judas Sorry i edited it. Don't worry it's in the Solid Hits category. Alejandro was a big hit. It's one of her biggest hits in various countries. This is true, however, in the worldwide scope. It didn't qualify to be a Big Hit-since it didn't do as good as telephone or paparazzi in sales.
pie-kun 1,765
You can't expect her to consistently pull off 4 or 5x platinum hits. In terms of America, 2x platinum is a solid hit, anything above 3x is a smash.

The BTW backlash/subsequent blackout and recovery is a legitimate excuse for the current state of Applause, I agree. I just think that looking at how Diamonds/Roar did, who are her main competitors, Gaga didn't stack up to the competition and deliver as being one of the top three female artists of today. jhonyguy04 3
and then attack other artists' sales WW calling them local acts Quote me in that. The only country I follow is the US cause I live there and it's the most important market. The only time I care about the world is when there is a tour. craig 680
More like 8/10 this was a solid ass hit. Yes, gotta remember Alejandro and Yuyi took months after they were dead on the charts to crawl across Two Million mark. Also with rise of streaming, aren't itunes down about 10% from their peak? So gotta add that to Applause for fair comparison.

Y&I hit 2M in like June 2012. 11 months after the album release and 9 months after the single release.

A ~2.5M selling hit (my rough estimate of how much Applause will sell within a year of release) might be lower than we were expecting or hoping for, but it's certainly nothing to scoff at. If she can churn out two more multiplatinum singles, the era will be a success singles-wise as far as I'm concerned. This is speaking in terms of America only btw. By the standards you're setting for Gaga, Diamonds wasn't a smash either. It had a mediocre debut and barely passed the 3x mark. So go ahead have your ridiculous expectations but please leave it out of this thread. Too many people here coming to spill their insecurities about Applause recently. Take it to that chart flop thread or whatever.
