It's a weird spot to be in. Especially considering all the high profile releases coming up. Miley and Katy are releasing soon and I don't want the second single to be overshadowed. Then again, if Applause is still Top 10 by the end of October and still doing well on radio, would it be wise to kill it? That is, if Applause stays strong until then (which is looking likely)

Applause was promoted heavily, especially in terms of radio interviews and it doesn't get any bigger exposure wise than opening the VMA's. someone like Lady Gaga can't afford anymore over exposure, that was the mistake made with Born This Way.

I do expect a second single pre-album release, but I'm not sure I'm ready for it yet.  Perhaps I will be in 3 weeks.  Applause still feels fresh to me. I feel like it was released 2 weeks ago.
