This image rekindled all those tacky memories of the BTW era in my mind, and I had to retaliate. I don't want to go back to those times when her style was atrocious and her music videos were awful. That is your opinion though. I don't like to talk about something that has already been beaten to death, but she changed pop culture with BTW. It was so brutally honest and straight forward that it touched people, willingly or not. Everything was so confident and bald, I'm sorry it didn't touch you but please don't come for something you don't understand. Remember that it is always okay to love but never to hate, words from Gaga's mouth. You cannot state that what she did was a mess, atrocious and awful. You cannot state it as if it were facts. Say 'I think', 'in my opinion' and then construct arguments about it if you wish to develop. But the greater good Gaga achieved with Born This Way will never compare to your opinion that it was a mess. She said she looked so "weird" because that's how she felt inside, an alien that doesn't belong in this planet. And you can't criticize someone for looking the way they feel for that is the bravest thing anyone can do. To just forget about cultural/societal censure and criticism and be Y-O-U on the outside and on the inside. She shook so many different fields: fashion, music, film, technology, performance... In all of those domains she did something completely new, challenging and thought provoking. BTW changed so many people, you cannot undermine it, that is disrespectful. She told you that YOU and only YOU can define your sense of beauty. Wear 3 wigs, a golf-ball sized dot on your face, ripped tights and feel the best you will ever feel. And NO ONE can take you down for it. The thing she changed this time around with ARTPOP is that she purposely gave something for both the classic pop culture lovers and the weirdo art nerds. The gorgeous ingenue giving body, hair and face but also the weird hybrid that is here to bring something new. You can read deeply into Applause and the video or just enjoy the song and the gorgeous aesthetic. Enjoy what you enjoy and just let the rest be. Also remember that the ARTPOP shoot was all shot at the same time, this was purposely showed after showing her glamorous "normal" side. Put that into context and ask yourself why. It may be a commentary about society accepting anything that looks attractive but snapping right back the moment it doesn't. May be just the different states of her gazing process. The different sides of her (creative) personnality... Her different icons fighting for the chair or actually co-existing within the same space. Maybe all of these, maybe none.
