The company revealed that Lady Gaga's 'Applause' enabled it to reach the milestone, when a user in the US city of East Brunswick, New Jersey used its iOS app. Some 100 songs from 17 countries missed the 10 billion mark by milliseconds, including Avicii's 'Wake Me Up' in Canada and Ellie Goulding's 'Burn' in Germany. Speaking about the achievement, Lady Gaga commented: "The exploration of music through technology is an important element of ARTPOP, so for 'Applause' to be the 10 billionth song Shazamed is very exciting!" Shazam now processes over 100 million tags a week, covering music, TV shows and adverts. More than 350 million people use the service in 200 countries, contributing £192m ($300m) to the digital music industry's sales. "People throughout the world love the fun, magical experience of Shazam, which is why we have continued to see explosive growth, both in the number of people who love our app and how often they use it," said Shazam's CEO Rich Riley. "It took ten years for the company to reach its first billion, ten months to reach its second billion, and now the company has seen user activity accelerate so rapidly that it only took two months to go from 9 to 10 billion Shazams." The company recently released a fourth version of its Android app, which features a new streamlined design and faster identification.
