i think its hard to judge songs based on how they sound live. when gaga first played y&I on tour, i didnt like it, but when i heard the album version, got it into it more and more. now its one of my favorite songs from BTW.

This. Yeah when Gaga first played Americano in  Guadalajara or how ever its spelled lol i thought it was terrible. I didnt even sit through the last few seconds. And then when I heard it on the album i was completely slayed. Its my second fave track on BTW next so scheisse really. So yeah its hard to judge without the actual versions (although I liked Y&I better live, and when i hear it on the album version i want to stab the radio.)

:awkney: ? it doesn't mean i have to like it though.... maybe if it was just a piano ballad it would have stood out for me

maybe i just have to wait for the studio version

Oh, I thought you were implying that everyone who only liked Swine was a swine and therefore a s-xual abuser. That was a derp on my part, sorry!  :dead:

Unheard Beat

I agree in some way.

I suppose with Lady Gaga's songs there's always this mission statement that I love. The Fame- satire about fame itself, The Fame Monster- passion about overcoming our fears, Born This Way- rejoicing who we are. Then ARTPOP. I love the concept (I don't like defining art, but that's a different matter), however every song besides AURA is simply mission-less. The songs reflect about what's actually happening to Gaga, the songs aren't about something more than the situation that they're in. To put it in a better perspective, it's like Gaga is releasing a whole bunch of Paper Gangstas. They're all circumstantial, like how Paper Gangstas was a song about being dropped from Def Jam. I don't know if I like circumstantial music per say- I like things that relate to anytime, not just one place.

I had a visual image of Gaga literally freeing paper gangsters from a cage. :rip:

My issue, personally, is that I'm not feeling the melodies. They feel like they don't really go anywhere. Like ARTPOP. "We could, we could belong together." That part is great and it feels like something amazing is coming afterwards... then "ARTPOOOOOP." A weak ending! MANiCURE is similarly aimless. To me, it's as if Gaga is releasing a whole bunch of The Queens. "I CAN BE..." Wow, what a strong start! Then the rest of the melody kind of tapers of. It's not satisfying!

Compare that with the chorus of Scheisse, for example. Or The Edge of Glory. They're not playing around.

Applause, Aura, and Swine have strong choruses, imo. They don't lose their melodic conviction but stay strong. Aura is especially good at this. I don't feel that MANiCURE, J&D, IWBWY, Sex Dreams, or ARTPOP have that strength (even though I like J&D and ARTPOP). Ultimately, not liking three songs and being okay with two shouldn't be that big of a deal when there are three other great tracks, right? Still, there's something worrying. I can't shake it.

I mean, it's your opinion and we value it, but I can't say I was disappointed.

This era made me realize that this is Gaga's best era so far. She is showing growth and I love it! That's something that's missing in pop music these days. We have many artists making the same music, relying on the same antics. The only thing that changes, is that they work with producers who will make their tired music sound more current. This isn't the case with ARTPOP at all. I'm very impressed by confident she's become with her style and her performances have been incredible. I was impressed by Jewels N' Drugs, and swine. I had some doubts about it. This will be a very solid era for her.

The only song that actually slayed me was Swine. And I Wanna Be With You was GORGEOUS.

I'm going to reserve judgement until the studio versions though - I generally liked the music except for Jewels & Drugs. Didn't like that one at all..

So you're not necessarily alone. None of them screamed smash to me.

Born To Slay

You need to have a closer look at Gaga's unreleased catalog.

You mean like Taylor Swift?

I'm not trying to be negative here, and I really am happy for those who are in love with the new music and the direction she's taking. But speaking as a loving fan, and not as a heartless critic, I'm just not digging the new music.

Like I said, I'm not trying to be negative, but I'm just curious to hear thoughts from anyone else who isn't ecstatic about the new music, because most of what I've read so far has been praise. I'm curious to know what people on the other side think.

Really the only song I liked was Swine (and Aura, but we already had heard that). I found most of the other songs to be just laughably bad. I wouldn't want to listen to any of those songs more than a few times. I found the lyrics, in particular, to be just awful. Easily the worst that she has ever put out.

It seemed like not only was the music different, but Gaga was as well. She seems so hurt, like she can barely keep herself together. I was really turned off during most of the performance because I felt like I was watching a washed-up version of Gaga perform, rather than the amazing performer I fell in love with. Did anyone else feel that way? She just seems so plagued by demons.

I don't even want to lure myself into thinking that the studio versions will be better, because I already made the mistake of getting excited for the lead single, the VMA performance, and for these new songs, all of which I've found to be very disappointing, particularly after waiting so patiently for so long and being told over and over that this would blow all of her previous work out of the water somehow. Going into the rest of the era, I think having no expectations will be best, for me, anyway.

The doors are open. you are free to leave.

I didn't get to watch the whole show, but I loved what I saw. I knew Jewels N' Drugs was going to cause massive amounts of meltdowns here, but the GP ATE THAT SONG UP.

That should definitely be a single. It will be a great move to have a diverse catalogue of singles. The only song that was kinda blah to me was MANiCURE.

Sex Dreams and ARTPOP >>>>>

Good job Gaga.

Did any catch the Mariah Carey teas she was giving?

Every song hit me the right way. The artistic ambition feels grown-up, the metaphors feel earned, and the lyrical imagery feels lived-in, particularly on "ARTPOP." "Sex Dreams" is the only one I'm on the fence about, 'cause that sound just isn't my kind of jam. Luckily she gave us 6 other sounds tonight :)

Edit: I'm surprised at the lack of love for "MANiCURE." I think it's a swaggering, singalong home-run. Plus, like... even Adele thought it was the best.

To be honest, the thing I was most disappointed about was how she featured T.I. on Jewels & Drugs. I mean, remember when it was first rumoured that Azealia Banks would be on ARTPOP and people got all up in arms about her use of homophobic slurs (and how it completely contradicts Gags' stance on breeding compassion + all that)?
...so why isn't anyone saying anything about it now?
