Album sales are terrible, but at least singles are strong. 3 songs hitting the 1 million mark with the profitable October-December window approaching is really good. No idea that Timber had sold as much as it had. Surprised that Crazy Stupid Love hasn't even cracked the top 40 yet despite over 2 months worth of sales (shows how transparent this pre-order system is). Shocked that Sam Bailey has sold as much as Lorde has this year. Taken aback to discover that Prism has barely hit platinum after 10 months of sales, over 1.7 million singles sales this era, lots of UK promo and her extensive UK tour. I thought it would have sold around 500k by now.

 

Overall, I'm saddened to see how difficult it is for females to gain success in the UK market right now. 18 out of the top 40 bestselling singles are females or a female feature, which is almost 50/50 (although most of them are features rather than leads), so the public's fine with buying a woman's single, but albums are a whole different kettle of fish. Out of the top 40 bestselling albums, only 9 are by female artists. That is absolutely outrageous. What's even sadder is that 5 out of those 9 albums weren't even released this year but are leftover success stories from last year. I've said it before and I'll say it again: getting a woman to buy another woman's album is a herculean task. It blows my mind why women are reluctant to buy women's music. It's no wonder so many female artists have to compromise their artistic integrity in order to sell and even worse, why so many of them are getting dropped. I think it's an issue that the music industry needs to seriously tend to instead of focusing on stuff like illegal downloading. If female albums sold as well as male albums, #40 would have sold around 500k.
