I have no idea how Happy sold 1m, I haven't been paying much attention to charts so I was surprised! Still no 1 on iTunes as well

I wonder if his album will perform this well too?

Happy is my least favourite of the three.

On the contrary, it's my top favourite among the three. Surprised too that it just reached 1 million. It came too fast, but then again I just remember it was released last year.

I hope Lily has a big single on her own back with this one  HOH was a good comeback and it was more about the statement, big in the media etc but it didn't really light up the charts which was sad. I don't really count SOWK cos it's not necessarily her song and seemed more about the John Lewis ad than her. Air Balloon is really cute tho and is doing well on radio, so fingers crossed.

bloody hell. of all of pharrell's songs to sell over a million, the 3 worst/most over rated do it.

I don't understand the sudden love for him. N.E.R.D were never big and never had any #1 singles or albums in the UK. His only studio album, In My Mind, was also a major flop and only produced one top 10 single (it was also met with a very mixed-negative reception from critics). I think that's why he gave it up as a soloist until now. The productions that he gave other people as part of The Neptunes only amounted to a handful of hits over all these years and most people didn't know or care who produced them. Then, Get Lucky and Blurred Lines hit with him as a featured act and suddenly, we're all over him. He releases a terrible solo tune called Happy, from a kid's animated movie of all things, and it goes down a storm. His album is now poised to do great things. What happened to make the world want Pharrell all of a sudden, when he hit his "peak" years ago, had no demand as a touring act or was billed as anyone's favourite artist and disappeared from the public eye years back (and had no demand to return)? It's an utter mystery. I just wish his success would rub off on Paloma Faith's lead single, which he produced, as it isn't taking off despite its vauge Blurred Lines beat. Trust the only decent song he's played a role in for ages is going down like a lead balloon.

Pharrell Williams's latest single 'Happy' has sold over one million copies in the UK, it has been announced.

The singer's latest track marks his third million seller in eight months following the success of Robin Thicke collaboration 'Blurred Lines' and Daft Punk duet 'Get Lucky'.

hmm i disagree. first of all, she wants to move was ALWAYS on music channels and everyone knows that beat. lapdance was quite big too wasn't it?

where i'm from, people definitely cared about pharrell before now and they've been waiting for him to make a comeback. his older songs don't necessarily have the best chart positions, but where i'm from, people KNOW and still love songs such as:

frontin with jay z, can i have it like that with gwen stefani, number one with kanye west which peaked at #31 but i know people still remember/listen to it, beautiful with snoop dogg seemed huge at the time but it only peaked at #23. i could name many more. excuse me miss with jay z is quite a classic, drop it like it's hot with snoop dogg was quite big, i'm a slave 4 u, senorita, rock your body, like i love you, MILKSHAKE, etc. people KNOW he produced these songs, where i'm from, at least.

i wouldn't exactly say he was in high demand, but i know people who still cared and missed his sound being big on the radio/music channels. i'd say the same about an act like outkast. huge in london, wanted in london, perhaps not so much in a rural area. i wouldn't be surprised if under 15s in the UK hadn't heard of outkast. same goes for r kelly. i was surprised when the poster 'craig' said in the US chart thread that r kelly was never big in the UK and no one cares about him here. as far as i'm concerned, he was, and some of my friends were surprised and intrigued to hear his feature on a lady gaga song. is 'craig' even from the UK? lol. you can't say these things by just looking at chart positions.

I'm from Canada, where R Kelly's chart positions lag way behind US just like the UK, and I never heard of R Kelly until he was referenced in Thrift Shop. And I listened to pop-rock radio all through the 90-00's. I certainly know Pharrell as a producer, kind of like Timberlake,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R._Kelly_discography

That doesn't mean Kelly was totally unknown, but he wasn't a household name outside fans of his particular genre (which wasn't as big in 90's outside US). But except for Chocolate Factory era, there was a HUGE gap in his sales US vs UKCan..

That period from the early 90's to mid-00's was weird, in the way acts could be totally HUGE in UK or Canada or US but not cross over to the other countries.

Oasis and Blur weren't that big a deal in US. We had a band in Canada, The Tragically Hip, with 5 straight album between 5 Plat and Diamond who never made it in US. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tragically_Hip_discography

Hug UK pop acts like Girls Aloud never even were marketed in North America. And in the same way, there were huge rap and R&B acts who sales were even more local to US than Taylor Swift.

i'd be shocked to know of any 18+ year old in the UK whose first time hearing of r kelly was from the thrift shop reference/lady gaga song. r kelly had two hits in the UK that i believe will have made him a household name outside of his usual demographic and they are i believe i can fly and the world's greatest. i believe i can fly hit #1 and was part of the soundtrack to a popular movie at the time. i remember being at school and every kid singing it and it's used as a background song on talent shows like the x factor now. same goes for the world's greatest which hit #4 but i remember it being used at school as a song to motivate us (lol). these things all contribute to a song's/artist's overall popularity. ignition was big too, but to a lesser extent. always on music channels, etc. it hit #1 but i'm sure it sold less than the world's greatest. bump and grind still gets played in clubs too. it's a classic to many people.

just because canada's chart positions are similar to the UK's, it doesn't mean the overall impact of songs/artists was the same.
