Shake It Off is a monster. In the past, 1D didn't need to do anything to debut at #1 or #2. They would just release the track, have no music video or do promo, but it would still get top 2. Now, even with a month's worth of pre-orders and just wrapping up a massive UK stadium tour, they're debuting below songs that were released weeks ago and aren't even getting promo by artists who aren't even that big here. Looks like 5SOS are beginning their route to overtaking them now. Does anyone know how much Ella debuted with? I'm asking because apparently she had the second biggest debut week sales for a female artist this year, after Sam Bailey's The Power Of Love. But Sam debuted with just over 72,000. So, Ella sold less than that, despite a huge #1 single and a top ten follow-up and tons of promo? That means that she was actually really close to ARTPOP's debut sales (65,000). If so, that makes me feel a lot better about Gaga's numbers as she didn't have Ella's single success, but at the same time, I thought Ella was projected to sell over 100k? Or was that just a rumour? Poor Jessie I really think she should have released at least 2 singles before the album A single with 2 features was not going to sell it on its own Yeah, it was pretty stupid to just release one single pre-album, and a collab at that. I'm shocked that she didn't perform Burnin' Up on X Factor - this was the biggest promo opportunity available to her and she didn't use it to promote her new solo single. Can you imagine the meltdowns if Gaga had performed something that wasn't her current single on XF? It was bad enough that she didn't sing Applause, instead opting for Venus, but at least she sang DWUW which was the current single and was in desperate need of UK promo after the non-event of Applause. Jessie's album peaks have fallen with every album - #2, #3 and now #5. She's never achieved a #1 album in any country, even when there's no competition. She's at that very difficult stage where it's just the fans buying her album now, which explains why it was #2 in the midweeks because her fans must have bought it in the first few days and then sales took a downturn by Thursday. It must have really stung when Ella changed her album release to coincide with Jessie's because it then became a given that Jessie wouldn't get that #1, but now this shows that even if Ella hadn't changed her date, she still wouldn't have got to the top and would only have got a #4 debut, which is still her lowest peak to date. It can make an artist feel better when just one artist stood in their path to chart dominance, but when they're thwarted by not just them but several artists with older albums who shouldn't be selling that much at this stage... Wow, record labels need to seriously address this issue of underperfoming female artists. I've been saying this for ages. It's not right that so many males can debut with over 100k and maintain steady sales for months yet the females debut small and don't hang around for long, even the ones who've had chart-topping singles. This proves that single success is absolutely no guarantee of album success. It's more about fan loyalty as opposed to what the public makes successful.
