MarkoLilMonster 17
I didn't like it at first, I was so dissapointed, but after 3rd listen, I liked it. Song is fun and catchy but it feels really empty like some people said. I am not feeling the song. There isn't any part of the song which stands out for me For example, the part after Gaga says "eww " in Judas is the best part of the song for me(In the most biblical sense, I am beyond repentance...). Applause just doesn't have that part for me
Creyk 17,817
I have a weird relationship with this song. When I listened to it the first time, I loved it, I love the vocal delivery, the chorus is super catchy and so energetic, I blasted it on repeat like 7-8 times. And then I did some other things, came back to listen to it later, and I did it, and it just felt so....empty and shallow. It just feels empty. I don't know why, there is just this very strong feeling of something being wrong. And then very quickly, the song started to get old to me. Like, I would start listening to it and my brain would zoom out, other things would take my attention and I would only notice that the song ended, it's like I can't really hear it. Now that some time passed, and I listened to it even more, I love the song. It is great. I just don't get it why it feels so old and boring when it actually sounds amazing and very energetic. Like, I love hearing it but it makes me feel sort of bad? I don't know why that is, still such a great song though, it's on the level of Scheiße and maybe even HML, so I give it a 9/10. Ronk 14,762
I think Applause gains appeal with multiple listenings. This bodes well for next week when it will be played more on radio. There is much richness and depth to the chorus, so much going on simultaneously, that it's hard to grasp it all at first listening. I also think there are artistic elements in the chorus. It's a builder. I love it. I live outside the space time continuum.
MelbHawker 6,583
After she explained it and I began to really listen to the lyrics, my opinion completely changed. As a fan/monster, I find it very "relatable" but not in the conventional sense of relating to a song; she wrote it about the energy we exchange with her during shows, and that's what I connect to. I think of it this way; when a fan writes about how they feel when they see Gaga live, you can relate to that directly, but this is Gaga's side of this relationship when she's onstage, so even though it's not a direct relation to you (unless you're some type of artist and know how that exchange with a fanbase feels), it just makes you feel the mutuality in this experience, and idk I might just be blabbing right now but after hearing her talk about it and then thinking about the song on my own, it's started to really speak to me. Well thought out tbh. Tell me what makes it different I never said it was different. But you did call it basic. So.
thatfoxyfeeling 13,010
It's a song that doesn't need to be a--lysed as the lyrics aren't relatable. This is a complete contrast to her previous work, but I've realised the purpose of the song is to enjoy it rather than read between the lines. 7.5/
Daredevil 2,133
Basic is when you sing about how much money you have (Lil Wayne), how beautiful/ fabulous you are (Madonna) , how good the party is (lmfao), how hot/ beautiful that boy/girl is (bruno mars, one direction, justin bieber) or how sad you are about your broken heart (taylor swift, adele) Applause is about the connection between fans and Lady Gaga and that's not basic at all. Remus 54
Tbh, I really can't see this song becoming iconic or memorable to the GP. Just Dance was an ear-candy, Bad Romance is infectious, and BTW is very uplifting. But this one, it lacks some magic on it. plus the line: "Pop Culture was in Art, now Art's in Pop Culture in me" is really putting me off the song. I can see the GP rolling their eyes on Gaga after hearing that line because they will still think that this Gaga b*tch is becoming full of herself and "too artsy" as a popstar. But after a few listens, it's growing on me. It's not a song that is an instant likeable like Katy's Roar, but as you listen to it and digest its elements one at a time, you will learn to appreciate the song more. My favorite part of the song is the bridge. The "Tuh-ouch, Tuh-oouch" is really breathtaking but the rest, bland.

Flippy 12,872
I like it. Do I love it? Kinda... In my opinion she could've done a lot better. Idk what I was honestly expecting (I'm such a flop fan, I know) I do love the chorus though! & the A-P-P-L-A-U-S-E backing vocal during the chorus as well! It's quite good, but it's probably going to be in one of my least favorite singles next to Just Dance. However, my opinion might change with the music video though! (Usually the music videos make me either like a song or not change my opinion at all) As of now I give it a 6.5/10 TMBT 3.22.11 // TBTWB 1.17.13 // ArtRAVE 6.3.14 // C2CT 5.28.15 // TJWT 8.13.17 // CWT 9.8.22 // TMB 7.22.25 & 7.24.
Big Papa 0
I do genuinely like the song, but I think the Koons line/pop culture line just throws the whole thing. But the chorus is amazing. It's always stuck in my head. koon/pop culture lines are my fave lines
Torsoface 3,262
First listen 6/10 Now 8/10 I mean... I couldn't figure out the lyrics in the chorus at first, it was so messy. What is the part between 2nd and the last chorus called? Well, I was really disappointed because Applause does not have it. While Aura leaked it made me like "omggggg im crying this is so masterpiece" and Applause was like "This is what we've been waiting for 2 years, THIS!?!" Jenniferella 2,774
I like it but I just know I'll get bored of it very soon. The only thing I think I'm going to love is the music video There is something about this song that seems off to me. Like...it's really short, it's really monotonous and the lyrics are kinda...well, not that interesting. The thing that annoys me the most is the production, there is absolutely no variation (same structure from the beginning to the end), I really don't get why she insisted on releasing it as the lead single. There is no risk, there is nothing new brought by Applause Anyway, it's an okay song for me and I know ARTPOP will have its gems so I'm not too worried "I have been writing LG5 since I was 13"
