Americano 31,061
Under performing is a relative term, and yes Applause is. It's a hit but its shooting below expectations, therefore it under-performed relative to what was projected.
Bt1 5,213
#1 , slaying Top 10, doing fine Top 20, underperforming Top 50, flopping Top 100, promotional single As u can see, Applause is NOT underperforming I measure things different. under 1m ( in 2013) - no possible - flop 1 - 1,5 m - undeperforming 1,5 - 2,5 - moderate hit I will stop here giving the fact that I dont see the song selling more than 2,5 m. chris777 112
Bad Romance and Applause are not comparable. Gaga was on top of the world when she released Bad Romance. She could afford to take the risk at that point. Applause was the perfect lead single out of the tracks she played last night because it was the safest. She is returning from a media blackout after an era that was filled with negativity. She needs to get the public back on her side again. Applause is still doing fine so I think she can afford to wait before releasing single #2. It's holding on nicely in the top 5 of iTunes and she still has more performances to help keep it there. She was on top of the world when she released Born This Way not Bad Romance. Hence the high debut numbers during the first week of the lead single and the album. Applause is doing fine, is a top 5 hit, but you can blame people for expecting more of her lead single (in the musical progression sense not the charts). I'm kinda mad with the radio, they should be playing it more
craig 680
Lets be honest. A smash like Bad romance could have made people forget about the blackout. Applause is doing fine, but with the right song, it was possible for Gaga to smash the charts like Roar. But Roar is an example of playing it safe and being rewarded. It's hard to top Bad Romance without accidently getting a Judas or a MTN (something too noisy or overblown or crazy for the public).
Americano 31,061
Her hope, if I'm reading her correctly, is to keep it in the Top 10 for many weeks with promotion and force radio's hand.

But people also say that Applause is the saffest song heard until now. The reward is more moderate.
Americano 31,061
I think Sex Dreams or MANiCURE would have been fine as lead singles. Maybe not MANiCURE actually.. But s-x dreams. I can see why Interscope wanted Applause though.

I don't really think it was the safest choice from what we've heard to be honest. Even Gaga said she deliberately wrote the verses to be confusing. Bt1 5,213
Sex dreams is too risky. You dont know when radio starts to make a big deal out of nothing. And until now it doesnt top Breathe on me from Britney. I don't really think it was the safest choice from what we've heard to be honest. Even Gaga said she deliberately wrote the verses to be confusing. That didnt stop the people calling it generic.
Hello Mr. Radio 45
Tbh any song that isn't #1 on iTunes and #1 on BB Hot 100 is a complete and total flop and should be deleted off iTunes and considered a buzz single.

She always plays safe, people are used to hear stuff like Roar from her. Gaga is more rewarded when she releases something different

Hello Mr. Radio 45
Light red, we were doing so well It'll pick up again. Can they discount "Royals" so Lorde can cockblock Kety?
