Billboard: 'Applause' to debut with 200k in US (Current: #3 - iTunes)

As lame as Roar sounds....it's not trying to be anything else but- a good, clean, radio friendly song. Applause is stuck in between with its loud and chaotic chorus that's trying to appeal to club banging radio sounds (but the verses and pre-chorus are super).

I'm curious what core data Billboard have used to come up with their figure; or rather if they have just pulled it out of a hat (or out of their ....) as it sounds.  There's quite a contrast in the UK where the Official Charts Company actually state how many copies it has already sold - real evidence, while Billboard want to say things to try to boost their own self-importance.

First of all, her sales in America are always less impressive than elsewhere in the world. Need I remind you all that she's #1 on iTunes in over 50 countries right now?

 

Secondly, why are you all surprised it's not done as well as Roar? Roar is basically Katy Perry's BTW: a self-empowerment anthem with a catchy chorus. Applause, on the other hand, isn't remotely relatable for anyone who isn't a popstar. It is relying solely on production and melodies, which, let's face it, aren't exactly groundbreaking or as "big" as Bad Romance or Poker Face. Don't get me wrong, I think Applause is a wonderful song, but it should be no surprise that Katy Perry is faring better.

Yes, It's a moderate hit in North America. And you are missing my point. We were betting on her to bring smash singles out like Shiecb or HML but she made You and I a single instead....so the same strategy might be applied to ARTPOP.

Has anybody taken into consideration the amount of streaming counts she's going to get as well? In today's day and age, actual sales aren't everything because of the heavy use of Spotify/YouTube/etc.

let's remember that some of her biggest singles-- Just Dance and Poker Face-- didn't have the largest debuts but climbed to the top and stayed there.   so Applause could easily do the same thing.

I think that all of the smaller countries put together will give around another 200k including UK and Aus and Europe, which means a 450k World wide debut, consider the fact that Judas did 900k worldwide during its whole life cycle and the fact that Applause is only in its FIRST WEEK with NO promotion. Theres still the Vma's and Video which may produce higher sales, even if it ends up selling 2 million world wide by mid september that is by no means a flop.
