AlienFugitive

This might be the most iconic moment of the VMAs of all time.

Man, I'm so disappointed in this era right now, and it sucks even more that I've been waiting 2 years for it and once again got sucked in by all the hype that Gaga and her team spouts out. I should know better by now.

Part of the issue for me is over-hyping, of course, but even taking that out of the picture, I am just so genuinely disappointed with the direction she's taking. She claims ARTPOP is all about possibilities for months now, and proceeds to start off the era by referencing everything from the past! She's too early in her career to be referencing herself like that. You don't earn that until you're at least 40. And referencing the most over-referenced work of art ever, The Birth of Venus...come on, Gaga. It was cute for 30 seconds in the music video, but making it the piece de resistance, the finale of your performance, and that's supposed to symbolize the entire ARTPOP era? It's just well-trodden territory that's not very creative, and I expect better from Gaga.

The ONLY way that might have worked would be if she were at the end of the BTW era, transitioning between BTW and ARTPOP, and she was recapping what she'd done in the past and saying goodbye to it, as a cute little farewell before all the new stuff comes in with the new album. But making it the lead single performance when it's all supposed to be about new beginnings? It just leaves such a bad taste in my mouth.
