I actually have second thoughts on those ones, whether it should be Ke$ha or PSY respectively. But Justin Bieber released Baby in 2010 and held the most viewed music video for quite a long time since then. Carly Rae Jepsen, on the other hand, secured the longest-running HOT 100 #1 of 2012. I strongly believe they were the ones who made the loudest noise in the music scene in those respective years, as relatively new acts.

The Justin Bieber one is fine, he dominated social media, publicity, album sales, and touring so I think it's safe to say he was the strongest debut act of 2010. Carly is debatable since she really hasen't sold an impressive amount of albums or had a hit since Good Time.

After seeing the album sales of the other artists who made it big in 2012, particularly Gotye and Fun, I've to now agree with regard to CRJ. They're just so many of them who produced one huge smash hit each back then that to determine clearly who's the biggest of them all would always be disputable. It could be Gotye, who sold 2 million copies of his album worldwide and a single that sold more than 7 million copies in the US alone... or PSY with his Gangnam Style phenomenon.

"No matter gay, straight, or bi, lesbian, transgendered life, I'm on the right track baby, I was born to survive." plowed it's way straight to number one.  It broke the record for debut spin count and was close to Britney's record for highest digital debut.

Macklemore is one of the hottest, if not the hottest, debut act of 2013.  If anyone can make a song like Same Love a hit, it's him.

Born This Way underperformed because of that. If Born This Way wasnt so specific i'm sure it would sell more.

Look at We R Who We R, Firework, F*cking Perfect etc.

I see your point, but the thing is, gay people love pop music but rap music lovers demography are not mainly gay people.

Born This Way is a electronic dance track with all the promo in the world

Same Love is a indie rap track with little promo.

I love Macklemore and Ryan Lewis but let's be real here, it's a very risky choice and i bet it's not gonna be a hit.

50 Ke$ha - Crazy Kids (feat. Juicy J)

I highly doubt that this song is going anywhere. Anyway, do all the four versions count to the total numbers of the sales?

I'd go with Gotye. His hit was about just as big as Carly's and he actually sold albums, so I'd say he takes the new artist crown for 2012.

This kind of safety in single choices shouldn't be encouraged... I'm surprised that you, as a Macklemore fan, would not want him to take a risk like this. If no artist is willing to take risks to break down barriers in a genre that generally has a homophobic reputation then what hope is there? Same Love has already been a big hit in Australia/New Zealand so it could follow the pattern of becoming big in the US after smashing overseas, not to mention the fact it's doing pretty well on iTunes with very little radio support. It's also coming off the back of two big hits, I think it's gonna do well.

A very common pattern! Usually songs do well there first and then do well in the US later like JGMAR and STIUTK.

I love how this is increasing slowly. I just hope it'll enter the top 20 before June 17th. Then, everything will be okay. :lala:

Hmmm.... I understand WarriorPrince more. I mean, Gaga didn't took risks during TF era coz we all know she was still in need of establishing her career. Then, she was slowly taking risks during TFM era. Until the time came that she was ready enough to took risks with Born This Way.

I enjoy safe single choices like the ones Gaga did during The Fame era and the first two from The Fame Monster and Born This Way. Burn me alive but i just don't see the point of it. They always end up selling less and being underappreciated by the GP. (except for Judas and i can come up with many logical reasons for that)

-

Same Love is already #38 on both US iTunes and Spotify with 17M AI. Impressive but nothing to drag about since they are living off their first peak. I'll call it a good single choice if it reaches top 10.

Risky choices end up being remembered more + they are the ones that make somenone a higher class artist. Bad Romance was a risky choice though! And the risky choices doesn't always sell less. Sometimes they sell less that an non-risky single but sometimes they sell much more!

Very valid points, but I'm going to continue rooting for Macklemore.  After Thrift Shop blew up everyone said it was a short fad that would be gone as fast as Harlem Shake, but it stayed put.  Then, everyone said that Macklemore is just a one hit wonder.

He's been blowing everyone's expectations out of the water, so who's to say he can't do it a third time?
