Magoo 6 Posted May 10, 2013 Share Posted May 10, 2013 I don't think the issue here is about the relative merits of downloads vs audio streaming as a measure of the commercial success of a song. The problem is bringing in how much a video is watched.  So the RIAA certifications are now not about the music; the highest award has been given to what has gained the most video views, i.e. that has been watched the most. 'Baby' is not up there because of the song - it is for other reasons that the video has been watched.  Also the weighting of whatever elements are given to the RIAA certification has become subjective; the opinion of a few grey suits in a room - and as such is unlikely to gain the acceptance that hard data like downloads can give. The separate elements like sales or streams should be awarded separately; not bodged together like this. I want Bad Romance to get awards for the song, and different awards for its video.  Springing a new method of certification out of the blue to apply to retrospective (sales/streaming) data was also a bad idea.
