I will come back to Bulgaria in 3 weeks and visit Rila and Sofia!

Much cooler than Sofia... not only cause it's my city lol. I hope you have a great time! I visited Poiana Mărului in Romania a few years ago for a conference. It was stunning. I still wanna go see the castles, just trying to find the time.

I previously visited the Black Sea coast (Balchik, Varna, Nessebar), truly amazing places. I only saw Veliko Tarnovo out of the bus window, passing by, but the river, the mountains, the silhouettes of the church towers were magical. In Romania, I think the Castles (Bran, Peles) can be somewhat overrated tourist-wise. I think Sinaia Monastery, lesser visited but close to Peles, is a great underrated spot, it has an old tiny church with medieval frescoes where you can collect your thoughts in peace. Bran Castle especially feels pretty commercialized these days. I personally prefer the average fortified churches from Transylvanian villages to experience homegrown Gothic. I wish I'll have more chances to visit Bulgaria in the future, next month we will only do some spots on the way to Greece (my main destination). We only spend the night in Bulgaria, so I worry I will not have the time to even visit the city itself.

Is Sinaia supposed to be underrated I thought it was the main attraction lol all organized tours from Bulgaria include it with Bran, which I know is more .. fake lol but I wanna make my own itinerary to fit in the Bucharest water park

I was there twice, and I saw less tourists than at the castles, which were absolutely packed. I liked Sinaia Monastery better. Another lesser visited place near Bran is Valea Cetății Cave, which you could add if you are into more remote locations/nature-related sights.
