Coasters are fun as hell and one of the safest rides at parks due to the insane amount of safety features implemented. Nothing is entirely risk free but like Future Lovers said, you're vastly more likely to die in a car crash on the way to or from a park than you are to even be injured on a rollercoaster. monstertoronto 12,121
They just announced at my local park, Canadas Wonderland, that they have indefinitely closed the two large coasters, Behemoth and Leviathan, which are similar to the one that the accident happened on. Maybe it’s the same manufacturer. But it’s scary to think they worry it could happen here too. Wonderland is also owned by Six Flags.

Karl 3,587
This is going to generate so much sensationalist stuff about theme parks. Like others have said, B&M are so reliable I have to assume this is an issue with six flags operations. The clam shell style restraints on here are not designed for bigger riders due to them being able to slip out as it rests over your thighs, but it shouldn't have been possible for someone too big to ride this. I guess we will have to see what the investigation says. We had a terrible ride accident in the UK with The Smiler at Alton towers, the ride operators over-rode a safety function as there was a train that was stranded on the track, it was the ops fault and the ride did what it was supposed to do but it affected Alton towers financially for years and they are still recovering. Similar situation on stardust racers at epic universe, ride ops should never have let that guy ride he couldn't hold his own weight. It's so incredibly rare for the actual ride to malfunction in these situations, really sad for the person who passed.

I’m sure you know this but just in case you don’t, this does not mean that anything is wrong with those two rides. They have decided to do it simply out of caution so it can be determined if this was the fault of the ride or not. The same way when an accident happens with a plane, the FAA will often ground other planes of the same model. It’s also worth noting that not all B&M hypers are closed. Only the ones at legacy Six Flags parks (so not the ones at what used to formerly be Cedar Fair either). This suggests confidence on the part of the parks and B&M that whatever happened was unique to Goliath.

In a statement, Six Flags said they were "deeply saddened by the guest incident," and that park workers and local authorities responded immediately. Witnesses described a horrific scene, saying the man fell and hit the ride several times. One witness told Cody Alcorn that the falling man was captured on their souvenir picture. "He was in our pictures," the witness said. "He fell and hit the car three different times." A husband and wife on the ride saw the man ejected from his car and bouncing off the coaster three times. "We saw it all," the man said. "We were having a great time and went to 'Oh my God, what is happening?' " the woman said. They both said workers checked their safety harness before the ride. It’s the same ride and seating, different color. It is so weird there weren’t seat belts aside from the thing that goes over your legs. It doesn’t go upside down but still there’s a steep drop. I might need a hero to save me from breaking
Quasi 11,051
I know this isn’t that significant in the grand scheme of things but just in the context of keeping things 100 percent accurate and to prevent misinformation from spreading, @RAMROD can you please switch the photo in the OP to the coaster in question which is Goliath at Six Flags Over Georgia, not Goliath at Magic Mountain. Thank you! I don't understand pineapples, so I don't eat bananas.
gumzy3000 8,016
I saw pictures of the ride where the accident happened and the theme park in my city has a similar rollercoaster with the same safety restraint. It basically just has a physical restraint that’s pushed down to your lap. I’ve always found that kind of weird but I trusted the process and I know deep down there is a 99.9999% chance nothing bad will happen. We got to remember these rides cost 10s of millions of dollars to make and designed by some of the smartest engineers around. That said I always wished they would give some seatbelts or additional safety restraints on it. Ngl, this incident has made me a bit scared deep down to go on similar rides in the future. While I wasn’t there, it’s a bit traumatic to know this happened. I hope the investigation makes it clear on what exactly happened. trolly troll troll
