Polygamous marriage would be a legal nightmare :rip:

I don't really know how they'd work 'cause our legal framework is built around two person marriages but I still think they should at least be afforded the social civil rights.

But then that just sounds like more of that "separate but equal" crap we gays faced before when they were pushing "civil unions" instead of actual marriage :laughga:

Another form of discrimination many asexuals face is how people treat older single people.
For women this is often particularly strong.

Marriage is such a powerful legal tool of control, just being single as an older woman regardless of sexuality comes with a lot of social scrutiny.

ETA single people regardless of sexuality are at a financial disadvantage as well.

I really love that they passed these protections.

As for polyamory discussion:

Polyamory is distinct from polygamy. One is sexuality, the other is to do with marriage I believe.

While the word monogamy has the same suffix, it does not seem to have the full implication of marriage. Or perhaps it is valued above marriage.

Marriage and monogamy is a whole structure that not everyone falls under, and yet people bare real repercussions when they don't fit into the molds.

You’re thinking of Bigamy which is where you are married to multiple people at the same time. Polygamy is to be married multiple times in your life.
For example if you marry, get divorced and marry someone else. That’s Polygamy. It used to be frowned upon because of very Catholic views on marriage.

Bigamy is illegal pretty much in the entire western world I believe. And is not legally recognised, you can also be fined and go to jail for committing bigamy too, for example in the UK you can get up-to 7 years imprisonment for bigamy. But it depends on the circumstances. For example if you willingly entered a second marriage knowing you were still married, have a history of fraud offences, or are getting married for monetary or visa related reasons—those all would get you out in prison.

Actually, I'm doubling down on this second point 'cause there are places in Massachusetts which recognize multi-partner domestic unions. They literally have every right that marriage grants except for tax filing status 'cause they don't have the authority to force the IRS to rewrite the code.

But may I remind the court that conservatives were also saying same sex marriage would be legal nightmares for hospital visitations, child custody, tax filings etc. But when same sex marriage rights became the law of the land, hospitals changed their forms, the IRS rewrote a few check boxes, and the world kept f*cking spinning :neyde:

I'd also like to remind anyone who's first instinct was to diminish or mock this that conservatives say all the time that we gays and trans people have all our rights and yet how tough is it for us out there STILL?

You don't even have to walk a mile in their shoes, the "A" is a part of the "+" in "LGBTQ+". They're our shoes too :crossed:

Now lemme wake up in the morning and find y'all being ignorant :crossed:

When were asexuals not protected?

Well I felt the same at first glance but if you think about it, people get so weird if you say you don’t want to marry now imagine you don’t even wanna date or **** and you say that and I’m like yeah sure I can see a world where something weird or untoward comes out of that

Some of your reactions are surprisingly intolerant and closed minded, shame on you :fthis: Especially since asexuality recently became illegal in Niger, it should be as clear as day that no matter what part of the LGBTQIA+ community you belong to, somewhere in the world you'll be criminalized.

Hmm, no, polygamy is being married to multiple people at the same time, look it up.

someone said something recently about "asexual rights activists" and my instinct was like... what rights do they need not to f*ck? BUT then I read more into it, and yes, it is important to not be discriminated against in the workplace etc. if you are indeed asexual. So even if that's not a large happening, I see no harm in protecting yourself in the future should there be an issue. Good for them!

People who choose not to marry or have children receive a differential treatments professionally in many ways. In workplaces they may sometimes be givednmore work load because of the assumption they have free time to spare, unlike their colelagues who have children and are gived softer expectations and more free days and leverage in the work program.

Dumb waste of time and energy.

It is not a waste of time and energy at all. It is filling in a noticed, exploitable gap.

Until this in Seattle, and indeed still across the country, there are actually no protections for someone that falls into one of these categories when it comes to discrimination in the work place or protection from hate crimes for the simple reason that these are not legally recognized categories.

While someone is legally protected from being discriminated against due to being homosexual, bisexual, or transgender, if someone is discriminated against on the basis of being pansexual, asexual, or polyamorous, there are no actual guardrails there to provide protection to them. Functionally, there is nothing stopping work places from not hiring or changing the way someone is treated on the basis of them belonging to one of these groups.

It in theory opens the door for consequence free discrimination as these are not protected classes. Seattle has decided to close that door.

Do you think it's a waste of time and energy to close discrimination loopholes?

Polygamy and bigamy are basically interchangeable in the US. Not sure if that's just an us thing or not. I think the latter is used mostly as a legal term akin to "fraudulent unions" since it's currently illegal.

But yeah, @gagzus, polygamy is marrying multiple people at once.

Ahhh so they’re basically the same thing got it. I always thought a polygamist was someone who marries consistently one after another and bigamy was being married to multiple people.
