Lets not rewrite history here to justify our viewpoints. Gaga, unlike a lot of her current peers in the industry, has way more involvement with one of the 2 main parties in the US & the managing elite of that party. She's not outside the tent pissing in. She's spent a decade actively working inside the tent. She has always had the right to do or not to do, to speak or not to speak, she still has those rights. And if you think people who have had active roles within policy bodies should not be challenged on their politics - thats incredibly dangerous thinking. I didn't say we shouldn't care, I didn't say anything about anyone other than Gaga - and what I said about her was that she was a professional entertainer, not an elected representative of any type. She has had links with the Dems, i.e. she has campaigned for them, and Biden appointed her to a committee (and maybe there were other links ?). Are you saying that because of those links she is obliged to speak up on Palestine (or anything) ? If that's what you're saying I disagree.
Lucas 31,581
It's too late, she should've done it a long time ago. If she did it now it'd be only because more and more people are calling her out for it and saying she is a zionist (she appears in all those lists that people make of celebs who support Israel/support the genocide). Even the timing of the BTW foundation interviewing a Palestinian man sounds so performative...

All of this happened after the whole world became massively aware of the genocide because of the Hamas attack. DWAS is currently the biggest song of her career and biggest female lead song of all time on Spotify. Her career is gonna be fine. Atp it’s just moral policing online because people want to make sure she shares their views, and what will they do if she doesn’t? We hardly see her on the news for being accused of being a “Zionist” daily like we do on Twitter (which tbh is the main place the view and arguments come from—I’ve barely seen it on TikTok and never seen it on any other platform I’m on outside of those, even on GGD we hardly have daily conversations about it.) In fact, even on Twitter she’s never trended because of being accused of Zionism. Not once. Your algorithm just shows you those tweets if you interact with the posts in the first place.

She was one of the few high-profile artists to proceed with a scheduled show. Praising Israel: During the concert, she told the crowd, "I love you, Israel". Media Remarks: In subsequent interviews with The Independent and The Associated Press, she stated that the world view of Israel "is just not reality," describing the people as being in good spirits and noting that the White House had assured her the area was safe. Resurfaced clips from this era have periodically circulated on social media, drawing mixed reactions of support and criticism. Online discussions have also focused on indirect financial and tech connections linked to her ventures and venture capital backers with ties to the region, adding to the ongoing debate among her fanbase seems like ur the ignorant one she has never once stood up for palestinians or ever even said anything about the genocide michael is jewish, her mom has jewish ancestry like come on, read between the lines, theres a reason shes not saying **** The “I love Israel” thing is obviously because she was performing there, and she used to say this in EVERY country she visited. Like you can find her saying it as a stock expression of gratitude at almost every concert. The “it’s just not reality” was specifically to do with her safety and the state of the country, because people thought the country would be unsafe and hostile for her to be in because of their views on homosexuality not matching the west and her being a vocal pro-LGBT+ activist specifically (the same way they get about Russia and Indonesia when she used to tour). And your response about Michael being Jewish and her mother’s heritage is an antisemitic view btw, conflating Jewish identity with the Israeli government’s ideology. Spoiler Also can guarantee you, 90% of people who were in fandoms (Little Monsters included) in 2014 were in their mid teens or younger and didn’t even know Palestine was a country or if they did they didn’t know the history has been going on since after WW2.
Brad 2,517
I have a ton of thoughts on this but I'll simplify as much as possible. I do think her saying something would be amazing. However, a lot of us older members on here were on the internet in a time where activism actually meant doing something, not just being performative. Most people calling for her to say something probably haven't even done a single thing to actually help the people of Palestine. There seems to be a "woke olympics" nowadays on the internet. An internet where everyone is accessible to everyone else in all possible ways at any given time. And I hate using the term "woke" that way so please don't mistake me for being anything but fully supportive of all people. "An ye harm none, do as ye will". When there's a hot topic or big issue people will latch onto it to show that they're a "good person" and that they "really do care" when in reality they mostly only care about being perceived as a good person. Do I think it's important to stand up and support people who are in need? Absolutely! Do I think you have to make a big deal about it to "prove" that you actually care? Absolutely not. People who actually care about these kinds of issues are actively doing something to help and aren't worried about how they'll be perceived as being on the right side of history. A lot of people like to bring up her performing in Israel and saying she loved the people there as some sort of "proof of zionism" and this, inherently, is super problematic. Just because a people's government is actively causing a genocide does NOT mean the people themselves are to blame. That crosses over into antisemitism. The German people didn't all support you-know-who so why would supporting the innocent people who wanted it to stop be an issue? MOST American people DESPISE our current administration and it's supporters, but does that make America as a whole terrible? No. The problem is the people in power. It's always been the people in power. You can support the people who have no choice in whose government they fall under while still acknowledging the absolutely terrible things their governments are doing. Another thing is a LOT of people in the US were raised with Christian ideologies. I went to a frickin Southern Baptist private school and was told "Yeah that land belongs to Israel" and never heard another point of view til I started doing my own research years later. A LOT of people just became aware of how bad the genocide was in recent years, so in the past if someone said they loved Israel or whatever, it probably came from a place of ignorance and their government being able to twist the story in their favor. TL/DR: All in all, I believe she fully supports Palestine. She's a good person and she's proven that for over a decade. We're all human, we make mistakes, and we're ignorant sometimes. What matters is what we do in the now and going forward with the knowledge we learn along the way. Free Palestine I feel a lot of people that know exactly who they are 👀🏳️🌈❓ 2 1

What I said was that I have not seen it and wanted to know who are these people you were referring to. Never said it was your fault, I know I'm uninformed hence why I said I don't go out of my way to find out what celebrities are saying about Palestine. She has never been obliged to get involved. That's still the situation. I agree that she has never been literally obliged to speak. But that isn't really the point I was making. I'm talking about whether her choice to speak or remain silent is consistent with the values and causes she has publicly championed over the years. Having the freedom not to get involved doesn't make that choice immune from criticism or discussion. We can acknowledge that she has no formal obligation to speak while still asking what her silence or engagement means in light of her own stated values. Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable.
