Mamdani bans AI for students up to 8th grade in NYC

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City’s public schools will temporarily ban elementary and middle school students from using artificial intelligence tools during the upcoming school year, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Wednesday.

The one-year moratorium — part of a broader assessment of how children in the nation’s largest school system interact with the technology — will apply to “all software that uses student-facing generative AI” for students through eighth grade, the mayor’s office said. It described the policy as the most expansive prohibition in the country.

At the same time, the city is establishing twice-yearly AI literacy classes for all public high school students. It will also launch pilot programs allowing some high school students to use a handful of AI platforms under an educator’s supervision. Companion chatbots will be prohibited across all grades, officials said.

or using AI on smartphones when teacher doesn't look

it only affects AI software at schools

There are ways of monitoring how students use AI on assignments (AI detectors, programs that monitor how the drafting process for an essay etc.), but the ban is mostly, I’d imagine, just for any kind of classroom use sanctioned by a teacher

it is not preventing them from using it outside school-owned devices,

it only affects the use of AI software and AI programs at official school PCs/tablets/laptops

it is amazing how many papers teachers receive from 5th graders these days that are already at master's level and how many kids qualify to skip high school directly to begin a doctorate

Saw a TikTok of a teacher that put an "AI check" on her essay assignments. In nearly pure white text it gave the direction to use a specific word three times and students either couldn't see it ('cause it blended in) or they didn't pay attention while copying the text.

All she did was search for that word. If it showed up three times, instant fail.

They can use it as a shortcut for homework but if they're unable to function in school, during school hours doing work at school, they'll either fail or improve enough to pass.

Homework was pointless before AI anyway imo so who cares?

One of my students submitted an assignment with part of the answer saying, verbatim: “if your teacher wants a more specific answer, you could also mention x, y, and z.” 

Like you couldn’t even be bothered to just read what it wrote either??

Oh yeah, I heard of that AI check with words that have the same color as the background and therefore are like hidden. It’s spreading on TikTok, and students are sharing advice on how to detect it, be more careful alongside the usual tips on how to use AI without the teacher noticing. This teacher won the battle, but not the war! 

Back when I was in school (long before AI), the guy sitting next to me was really poor at almost every subject except PE. He was struggling academically, but there were always ways to compensate for it.

He would usually give a presentation prepared at home, with no one knowing who actually created it that was good enough to offset his academic deficit. Then there were times when folders were collected; he would borrow mine, copy absolutely everything out in neat handwriting, and get a good grade that balanced out his poor performance.

Even if students fail live in-class exams now because they aren't learning for themselves which is resulting in bad grades in in-class exams, they’ll still be able to compensate. They can simply memorize texts generated by AI or use AI to create presentations, then deliver them in class. Grades aren't based solely on written live exams; there are also oral grades and marks for "other participation," so these components can balance things out.

We once had an assignment to write a film analysis (this was again also long before AI), and I remember a classmate raising her hand and reading out a text that seemed very, very familiar to me. Familiar because I had found it on Google first page myself the day before to complete the assignment.  She read it out shamelessly and got a good grade for it. It even contained rare technical words, words she could barely pronounce, yet she was praised for it nonetheless.

While ways existed before and cheating isn't new, AI has made it as easy as possible to cheat and to avoid failing in the end.

In the end, the student will likely still get the minimum passing grade or he will be able to compensate for it with other subjects and be promoted to the next grade. He will learn that his approach is successful nonetheless, because the penalties are minor and the time savings significant and the main goal still achieved. He can also count on the fact that other students are using AI en masse, and the teacher simply cannot afford to fail half an entire class or else he’ll be summoned to the principal’s office who will tell him to adjust the grades.
