Would be horrible if they did As a portuguese person who knows the culture quite well, i can see most cops ignoring medical for face masks even if by technicality it would be covered by this law Portuguese culture usually follows the principal of stuff more than the technicalities and if something doesnt make sense due to a technicality many people often as a result brush it off accordingly. I can see most cops thinking its dumb and ignoring it tbh That said it depends who u get, cuz u also get a certain sliver of the population that goes to the other extreme and gets very technical and religiously follows rules by the book probably more than here in Canada probably as an over compensation for those who dont and that will apply to some in law enforcement too but neverthless i can see more cops in Portugal turning a blind eye than in some other nations Edit: Cops in Portugal i have found in general are less assh*le behaviour like than in North America. lasagna 3,441
banning people from wearing burqas is genuinely so mind numbingly pointless to me youre affecting such a small percentage of people for an (incorrectly) perceived threat that has something vaguely to do with american facism its just such a pointless endeavor

LOVEDRUG 11,303
Taking the most charitable view possible, I can understand the argument; where I am, motorcycle helmets and ski masks are often banned in shops and restaurants for the same reason. However, as a classical liberal, I find it hard to see any measure like this as anything other than unjustified banning and policing of people's personal conduct. Equally, I don't particularly like Islam, for the same reason I don't like organised religion in general, and I think it's hard to argue that the burqa is anything other than a means of controlling women (even if many women choose to wear it today, and all power to them, I'm yet to come across a convincing argument for the original purpose of it being anything else, just like certain Christian and Orthodox Jewish rules about what women can and cannot wear), but it's not up to the government to dictate what religious people can and cannot wear. The battle surrounding religious practices is fought and won in the court of public opinion and discourse, not mandated by the state. Precisely. If you disagree with the idea behind the burqa (and I do), you need to have those conversations and persuade people. That's central to living in a state with freedom of speech and expression. If you ban it, you're unlikely to stop women from wearing it, you're simply going to push women who do wear it out of public life and make further government overreach easier for the public to swallow. There's also the fact that political arguments that revolve around 'this Islamic thing is a security risk' are often coded ways of playing into Islamophobic tropes, but that's more about communication than political ideology. I want people to abandon religion because they're being taught science and a grounding in reality, not because their culture becomes illegal. alecks 751
Tbh this is my issue with other countries, particularly ones in Europe, virtue signaling over the current state of politics in the US. Conservative politics are rampant across the world currently. If the US passed this policy, I guarantee the Portuguese and rest of the world would have a lot to say about it. You can disagree with what’s happening here, most of us do as well, but don’t be so arrogant as to think the same thing isn’t happening within your own borders.
